The pages are burning....

I was contemplating today the days of my life that I have already spent and forseeing the days ahead. Thinking about that brought to mind this song.I am very fond of allowing the words to songs that I like have an application to my own situation.

Do you ever do this? What are some songs that applied to YOUR life at various times?

Anyway...ENJOY....the words of our good friend STING...

Let me watch by the fire and remember my days
And it may be a trick of the firelight
But the flickering pages that trouble my sight
Is a book I’m afraid to write

It's the book of my days, it's the book of my life
And it's cut like a fruit on the blade of a knife
And it's all there to see as the section reveals
There's some sorrow in every life

If it reads like a puzzle, a wandering maze
Then I won't understand 'til the end of my days
I’m still forced to remember,
Remember the words of my life

There are promises broken and promises kept
Angry words that were spoken, when I should have wept
There's a chapter of secrets, and words to confess
If I lose everything that I possess
There's a chapter on loss and a ghost who won't die
There's a chapter on love where the ink's never dry
There are sentences served in a prison I built out of lies.

Though the pages are numbered
I can't see where they lead
For the end is a mystery no one can read
In the book of my life

There's a chapter on fathers a chapter on sons
There are pages of conflicts that nobody won
And the battles you lost and your bitter defeat,
There's a page where we fail to meet

There are tales of good fortune that couldn't be planned
There's a chapter on god that I don't understand
There's a promise of heaven and hell but I’m damned if I see

Though the pages are numbered
I can't see where they lead
For the end is a mystery no one can read
In the book of my life

Now the daylight's returning
And if one sentence is true
And all these pages are burning
And all that's left is you

Though the pages are numbered
I can't see where they lead
For the end is a mystery no one can read
In the book of my life

I, too, often apply the words of songs to my own situation. As I travel often for work, this song by Allison Kraus & Union Station (originally by Dolly Parton, I think) has always touched me:

When the mornin' sun
Streaks across my room
And I'm wakin' up
From another dream of you
Yes, you know I'm on the road
Once again it seems
All that's left behind
Is a chain of broken dreams
But you know that I love you
You know that I love you
Oh, I love you
And how I wish that love
Was all we'd need to live
What a life we'd have
'Cause I've got so much to give
But ya' know I feel so sad
Down inside my heart
That the dollar sign
Should be keepin' us apart
But you know that I love you
You know that I love you
Oh, how I love you
And if only I could find my way back to the time
When the problems of this life
Had not yet crossed my mind
And the answers could be found in children's nursery rhymes
I'd come runnin' back to you

But you know we can't
Live on dreams alone
Got to pay the rent
So I must leave you all alone
'Cause you know I made my choice many years ago
And now this travelin' life
Well, it's the only life I know
But you know that I love you
You know that I love you
Oh, I love you

I do very much the same thing, and thought I'd share a favorite Willie Nelson song that found a very special place in my life. It's simple, little known, and I think much underappreciated for it's placement near the end of his Red Headed Stranger album. It's called "Hands on the Wheel."

~~~
At a time when the world seems to be spinnin' hopelessly out of control,
There's deceivers an' believers an' old in-betweeners,
That seem to have no place to go.
Well, it's the same old song, it's right an' it's wrong,
An' livin' is just somethin' that I do.
An' with no place to hide, I looked in your eyes,
An' I found myself in you.
I looked to the stars, tried all of the bars.
An' I've nearly gone up in smoke.
Now my hand's on the wheel, I've something that's real,
An' I feel like I'm goin' home.
An' in the shade of an oak down by the river,
Sit an old man an' a boy,
Settin' sail, spinnin' tales an' fishin' for whales,
With a lady they both enjoy.
Well, it's the same damn tune, it's the man in the moon.
It's the way that I feel about you.
An' with no place to hide, I looked in your eyes,
An' I found myself in you.
An' I looked to the stars, tried all of the bars.
An' I've nearly gone up in smoke.
Now my hand's on the wheel, I've something that's real,
An' I feel like I'm goin' home.
Speaking of Willie Nelson....Here is my favorite ( as sung with Bonnie Raitt)
YOU REMAIN
What do you do with the sands of time
When they carve out lines around your eyes
I can close my fists up good and tight
But I can't hold back the sands of time
What do you do with a memory
That just hangs around and stares at me
I can tear that frame down off the wall
But it won't erase the things I saw
Night and day
Night and day
You remain
You remain
What do you do with old regrets
There's a box full underneath the bed
Just close enough not to forget
But do what do you do with old regrets
There's old house key in a kitchen drawer
To the door I can't unlock no more
Sometimes I hold that key real tight
But what do you do after goodbye
Night and day
Night and day
You remain
You remain
Night and day
Night and day
You remain
You remain
Everything on the album, (yes, I said "album") "The Sea" by Rod McKuen. His "Soft, Listen to the Warm" is fantastic.
A lot of songs have embedded their lyrics in my mind over the years. Each having their own little niche for certain memories. (Even changed a name in the songs sometimes to fit.
I am sure that there are more accurate songs, but the first one that popped into my mind when you posed your question was Cats In The Cradle by Harry Chapin.
