Hi, I'm Dan and I'm a (n internet) virgin

Well, y'know, obviously not in the sense that I've never been on the internet before. I mean, I've been downloading horrendous pornography since before you were born (assuming, of course, that you were born some time around 1999.)

But I've never used the internet as a means for meeting new people, and as a result, I'm fairly hopeless at this whole thing. For instance;

1) I recently went into a chat room for the first time ever, and found the whole thing highly confusing. Not that the people in there weren't pleasant, welcoming and friendly - they were all of these - it's just that I had absolutely no idea what was going on. I still don't have a clue as to what buying people virtual drinks is all about.

2) Adding new people to messenger or similar. Almost all the people on my msn list are friends I've met in real life, and as such I can put a face to a name, and understand what makes them tick. Meeting new people on msn, I have simply no idea how to start a conversation - if I've effectively ignored you on msn by saying nothing other than hello, it's not me trying to be rude - I simply don't know what to say next. Which is odd because in real life I normally find it really easy to start a conversation - indeed, put me in a group full of quiet people and I'll have everyone talking in no time.

Which isn't to say I'm not going to try. I'm fairly sure that in no time, I'll have learnt my ROFLs from my LMFAOs - or at least will be able to blag like I do.

I'm just sorry for anyone I talk to in the meantime...

Pointers?

Dan
