The Origin of some well known phrases.......

Hi there,thanks for dropping in.

Have you ever wondered where some of the phrases that we use in everyday language came from?

I came across some interesting facts as to where they originate from,so i hope that you enjoy them.

I don't know just how accurate & true theses are,but i have no reason to doubt the source where i found them.I'll leave their interpretaion to you to decide.

In George Washington's days, there were no cameras. One's image was either sculpted or painted. Some paintings of him showed him standing behind a desk with one arm behind his back, while others showed both his legs & his arms.

Prices charged by painters were based on how many limbs would have to be painted. The more limbs in the picture, the more expensive it would be to paint. Therefore it gave rise to the expression.."Costing you an arm & a leg".

AS incredible as it sounds, there was a time where men & women took a bath ONLY twice a year.(In May & October)Women kept their hair covered, while men shaved their heads & wore wigs.(this was because of lice & bugs etc,at the time)

Wealthy men could afford good wigs made from wool.
They wer'nt able to wash the wigs,so to clean them they would carve out a loaf of bread, put the wig in it's shell,& bake it in the oven for at least 30 minutes.

The heat would make the wig,big & fluffy.Hence the term "Big Wig".Today we often use the term "Big Wig" for someone who is wealthy & powerful.

In the late 1700's,many houses consisted of one large room, with only ONE chair furnishing it.Commonly a long wide board folded down from the wall, that was used for dining.

The "Head of the household" always sat in the chair, while the rest of the family sat on the floor around the table.

It was usual that the Man of the house would sit there,as it meant he was important & in charge. The one sitting in the chair became known as the "Chairman".Hence it gave rise to the expression "Chairman of the Board".

Ladies once wore corsets as a piece of fashion. They would tend to be laced up the front.A proper & dignified woman would wear it fully tied up & tight, meaning that she would keep a certain posture out in piblic.Hence the term "Straight laced".

At local Taverns, pubs & bars in the old days, people used to drink from "Pint-sized & Quart-sized containers.A barmaids job was to keep an eye on the customers & top up their drinks as they needed them filled. She would have to keep an eye on who was drinking "Pints",& who was drinking "Quarts".Hence the term.."Watching your P's & Q's".

Early politicians required feedback form the public about what they felt was considered important to them.As there were NO phones,TV's or radios, they relied upon their assistants to find out the public opinion.

They were instructed to visit all the taverns,& pubs in the area,& listen to peoples opinion's on political & everyday concerns.Often they were dispatched with the phrase "Go sip some ale",which over time has been reduced to GOSSIP,which we use today for the same reasons,to learn local opinion, but of a different nature than before.

Oooooh...I Do like a bit of GOS,don't you?

Have a nice day!

Hugs & kisses,

I know...the thoughts of it senda shivers down my spine too.I do think that they washed their "Bits" though, more frequently.

I guess thats one reason why so many people died of Syphilis & Gonorhea in those days.

Thanks for your compliments,your too
