Are you a real man?

I've read alot of discussions on this site about shady people and the shady, deceitful, dishonest things that they do. The general consensus is that they should be strung up by the balls and flogged unmercyfully. Thankfully I'm not in danger of having this happen to me...although I wouldn't mind being tied up and spanked, but that's a story for a different day.

So anyway, I read this article in a magazine, it starts out by saying how common the 7 seven deadly sins are, and goes on to offer a new set of virtues to live by.

Rather than judge our character in terms of Lust, greed, pride, sloth, gluttony, envy and wrath; because let's face it anyone that's reading this right now knows a thing or two about lust, and pride is generally thought of as a good thing. Greed, while it's not exactly a good thing, we all want more than we need right?

What the article goes on to say (and I agree) is that the true test of being a real man lies in the ability to

#1 Be honest. With yourself and everyone else. Keep your word and don't cut corners. Resist the urge to make excuses for yourself.

#2 Have self control. Don't do things in excess, sustain your temper. The man who rules over other men is strong, but he who rules himself is mighty.

#3 Show kindness. Be kind to people and learn to expect nothing in return.

#4 Have enthusiasm. "We should not live in the middle of an octave. Our hearts should hit all the high notes as well as the low notes. We ought to sing the whole song!" Don't let your wariness of the world inhibit hope. Don't be cynical for the sake of avoiding the appearance of being naive.

#5 Have heart. Let your true feelings show. Be courageous and generous.

#6 Humility. Offer up an authentic version of yourself, and don't lose track of your own view or the world.

#7 Awe. Some moments in life speak richly for themselves. Celebrate your sorrows as well as your elations. Don't let a day go by without letting it blow your socks off.

I read this article a number of times now, and now after paraphrasing it on here tonight, I'm really starting to feel it. I even catch myself occasionally and stop to think if the things I say and do fit into any of these categories. From what I can tell, I'm doing ok, I think I might need to work on enthusiasm and awe a little bit more though. How do you stack up? Are you a real man?
