I was driving in to work tonight with my window rolled down because it was a lovely, warm night. Singing along with the radio, trailing my hand out the window.

One of my favorite places to drive by at night are the alfalfa fields. This time of year, they are cutting the hay and bailing it...smells so good at night. That's the smell of summer to me.

So I'm driving along, enjoying the smell and the fresh air, when suddenly there is a wet thwack and I feel something gooey squish into my hand and something wet splatter slightly on my face and chest.

I am wearing a V-neck shirt tonight and I could feel something slipping slowly down my chest, so I pulled over immediately and switched on the light.
Looked down to find....
...a SEVERED grasshopper head heading for my cleavage!!!!!!

He flew into my hand, I guess, and splattered all over.
So I'm feeling all squeamish and icky now even though there isn't a single trace of bug juice on me anymore, but still.....yuck!

Have you ever had slimy, nasty, dismembered bug sliding down your cleavage, NG? Trust me...it was pretty bad. lol

Yeah, it could have been worse...but I don't want to think about it.

This reminds me of when I got into fitness overdrive mode once in which I'd start off my day with a yoga routine then move to weights then ride my bike up to the swim club and swim and then ride home.

The ride to the swim club was uphill but was the reverse going back. It was nice having nearly the whole way home be downhill like that and going home I also had a really nice panoramic view of the whole area. One day I was on the last stretch of downhill there and had really picked up up some speed. And on one of my big inhalations of air some sort of insect flew straight into my mouth. Actually into my esophagus or into that throat junction area where something has access to both your windpipe and the pathway to your stomach. I had no idea what type of insect it was but it was not a small one.

I could tell that it had been battered up enough by hitting the back of my throat at the velocity that it did so that it was not in good shape at all and was nearly broken into peices.

Trying to cough it up did no good at all and I really did not like the feeling of having this damaged insect of an unknown type just sitting there stuck in my throat. The only other option seemed to be to swallow it so just went ahead and did that. And voila, no more insect and the incident was over.

I still have no clue what it was but I was praying that it was not a bee or a wasp or something like that because I could just picture getting a bite in there and the having it swell my windpipe shut and then suffocating due to that.

I'm guessing you might now think twice the next time you have the urge to stick your hand out the window while driving. Which then leads me to wonder if anything like what happened to me with a bug has ever happened to a dog when it was sticking it's head out the window while riding in a car. I'd guess the odds are that it has.

My dog likes to ride with his head out the window. One day we were driving down by the river and, sure enough, his head was out. Didn't think anything of it until we got home and noticed that he wouldn't stop shaking his head and scratching. Looked closer to find that there was a ton of those little mite-type bugs stuck in his fur all over his face.

I just finished driving from Los Angeles to Berkeley via Interstate 5 this evening. I drove right through that "lovely warm night" you described.

You should see my windshield.

Most of the splatters are completely unidentifiable. I'm guessing they were bugs of various shapes and sizes and levels of gooiness.

I kept my windows closed and my hand inside. Now I need a car wash very badly but will wait until after my return trip.

However, I don't see one tenth as many bugs in California as I do in more humid states, so I consider myself lucky.

How long has this problem been BUGGING you? Are you feeling INSECT-cure? Ready to FLY off the handle?

Okay, I'll stop now.

curious082385 replies on 5/18/2006 3:30 am:
Yep, I give up on keeping the front of my car bug-free this time of year...it just doesn't work. Go through the car wash and by that evening, it looks just like it did before.

I know that had to of hurt.
I had a bumble bee get stuck between my fingers one time cause I was letting my hand dangle out the window.
To this day I remember that and I find myself retreating my hand when I catch it flowing in the wind.. lol

curious082385 replies on 5/18/2006 3:36 am:
I was more worried about his head then about the sting of him hitting my hand, to be honest, but yeah, it did hurt.
Ouch on the bee...*cringe*...that had to have hurt too.

It 's one of the reasons I sing when I drive.
Even bugs can't stand my singing so they stay well clear of me.
