Stop the Violence ..or not

Okay, first things first I absolutely hate using violence ...partially it means other means have failed -meaning perhaps I've failed- and partially because I'm rather good at being violent - I'm not sure that how long an eternity a second really is really becomes apparent until you've had the adrenaline flowing more than a few times... especially in a fight when you're actually doing something on that timescale of instants..

But onto the topic/title at hand.. part of me finds it a bit funny that there -even may- exist people who may actually believe violence is 'evil' ...I'm not trying to insult pacifists here, because quite honestly I believe that takes a lot of personal strength and determination to live that way.

It's just that from my point of view violence is one of the most basic tools required
to form a civilized society. ...or perhaps any kind of functional society.

Now laws or codes of conduct are another seemingly another basic requirement ...and it seems that it goes hand in hand with use of violence.

How else does one enforce the laws?

Anything less than violence requires the lawbreaker to recognize the authority of the individual trying to enforce the law ...

So what other course of action is there when that authority is willfully disregarded?

Or do we let everyone do as they wish? -regardless if what they wish harms someone else....

But perhaps I have missed something in my pondering on this issue.... so please do share your thoughts.

That is basically why I never, ever whipped my kids; disciplined them, yes, but was never physically or mentally violent toward them.

However, that is 2 people in my little 'world', and not the whole wide, say, Ron White said, "You come to Texas and kill someone, we will kill you back!" I don't think it's a total deterrent to such acts of violence, but somewhat. No one can seem to think up anything better, either. Jail 'rehavilitation does not work in the majority of cases, but it does keep them off the streets, for a little while at least. Again, society has not come up with a better solution, or a real solution at all; just a stop gap.

There is always going to be envy, and hate, and lust for power and money and all long as there are human beings on this Utopia, unless we all become 'stepford' type robots, basically.

complexlysimple replies on 7/26/2006 3:44 pm: a way you've come up with the exception to this idea ...the values have to be taught and agreed with before the individual starts to question the validity of the values and disegards them ...which I suppose could be done ..later in life thought it might very well mean reducing someone to a child like state ....and that's not very nice...
