Interesting article on sex workers in FT 12/13 August

The FT is essential reading for me however I was surprised by yesterday's edition. In the magazine is an interesting article "All in a day's work" that's worth reading if you can.

The writer's viewpoint is, imo, a little odd/blinkered. She seems to have a somewhat puritan outlook - sex outside a good steady relationship is bad, prostitution is bad, people who are sex workers must have had traumatic experiences for them to choose to do that.

Otherwise, the article's central character is Chris, a male prostitute, from a middle class background, who by all accounts has been very successful (financially) in his chosen profession. Some funny moments too, like his first booking was a married couple - both in the police force - he was so terrified that he was being entrapped so couldn't perform!

One quote I thought was interesting and wanted to share though was this:

"The internet has created a market out there for people wanting diversity and difference. I recently met a man in his sixties contemplating becoming a sex worker."

"The internet has not only created a market for diferent types of escort, but it has also increased demand for sex workers. Professor Weeks (London South Bank Uni, writer of a history of sexuality) says that, together with the proliferation of the gay press, the internet "increases the volume of sex trade as people's interest is stirred by advertising."

I'm not sure I agree with this. I think that the desire and demand has always been there. Technology like the internet and cellphones make it easier to explore possibilities in a low risk kind of way.

I'm happy to hang out here, check out the scene, chat a little whereas I wouldn't go to a swingers club. I can protect my identity, be selective and have fun in a way that my parents' generation didn't. (AFAIK! lol).

Oh well, back to the companies analysis!

I am not a prude but I don't think a career in sex is something I'd consider. Primarily because my friends and family would find out eventually and, although it is my choice, I prefer the easy road where I don't have to deal with conflict. My other reason would be that sex is something that I treasure, I wouldn't want to have sex with someone that repulses me even if I were to be paid handsomely.

I do not see any problem with other people choosing these career paths though, infact, I can't imagine what puberty would've been like without a copy of Playboy!! What the internet does is market the sex trade very effectively. The majority of the population have access to the internet and it is a relatively safe way of researching what is available should you wish to partake.

If I remember correctly prostitution is the oldest profession, technology is just bringing it into the 21st century.
