That damn deer...

So tonight, I was driving home from work on a two lane, dark highway. I live in a rural area so there are no lights along this road. All of a sudden, a huge fucking deer decides to jump out in front of my car and remain there frozen. It came out of nowhere so fast that I had no choice but to hit it or risk swerving into the other lane and into oncoming traffic. I took the obvious choice but tried to swerve just a bit and stay in my lane. Unfortunately, I ended up hitting the deer with the right corner of my car.

The entire right side of my damn car is gone from headlamp to rear bumper. They will have to replace the hood, fender, two doors, the headlamp assembly and possibly the rear quarter panel and front bumper. That doesn't include the steering or frame damage that may have occured. The damage will be accessed more tomorrow.

So there sits my baby in the driveway, jacked up and not driveable. I am out $500, the fucking deer is dead and I will be late for work tomorrow because I live 40 minutes from a rental car place. The flip side is, I am alive and not injured, just a bit sore.

There is also an emotional impact in all of this. I am very anti-hunting and refuse to eat deer, both norms in my part of the country. The deer were here first and we have no right to take their lives for our own personal gain. To even see a deer on the side of road can bring tears to my eyes. So you can imagine how killing one feels, regardless of whether it jumped out at me or not. I took the life of a living creature that was only following his god given instinct to move in order to keep warm in the winter.

Now, I am not making this post an argument for the abolishment of hunting. What you do is your own choice. I am just trying to give you an idea of how I am feeling right now. Hell, maybe if the hunting will help reduce the deer population, I should support it. Lord knows, I am pissed off enough to do so. To be pissed off and sad at the same time is a really strange feeling. Kinda of like when you get dumped by a guy that you planned on dumping in the near future because he was a bad fuck.

Well that was my day...hope yours was better!

You are alive and not in some intensive care unit hooked up to life support. Yes it sucks, but it could have been a whole lot worse.

about the hunting thing...up here where i live, a lot of people depend on deer and moose for their year's meat.

FUN-You are right. Thank you for putting it all in perspective. The car can be fixed ($3200 worth of damage) but my life is invaluable. Still, it is a frustrating and sad situation. Thanks for your comment.

CRAIG-Thanks and thank you for visiting my blog. Hope we can connect soon.

NOR-Thanks for the hug, backactha! I know what you mean about the deer meet as I live in TN. It is a personal preference of mine not to eat it, however, I respect those that choose to do so as I know several families of modest incomes that rely on it. If you hunt, please be careful! Thanks for visiting.

When you say you're out $500.00... Is that your collision deductible or your comprehensive. Because hitting a deer is a comp claim, not collision. You should have the same deductible as if you took a rock in the windshield. usually $50.00. If not, you should check with your agent and find out how much the premium would go up if you changed your deductible. This may help out if you happen to dance with bambi in the future.

Note: As someone who has worked in the collision industry for many years, I gotta tell ya... the deer always wins.

Main thing is you're ok.

My daughter hit a deer on 40 coming back from Memphis...doing 70mph. Not a scratch on her, thankfully. The car, however, well...it ain't so purty. Imagine an 8 pt buck ripping off the front panel, denting the hood, shatters the windshield, dents the roof, then bounces off the van behind. It sucked. She's still hesitant about driving on the interstate through that area.

I heard rumor that the limit on deer might be raised due to overpopulation this year. Like you, I can't stand the thought of shooting one of those beautiful creatures, but judging by the number I've seen in my neighborhood lately, it might be best.

Tires, $500 is my comp coverage but thanks for the tip, I will check into changing it. While my car has been in the shop, it was damaged by a hail storm. They are covering it but it is just another thing wrong with it. See my luck??!!

DT, yeah they are everywhere this year. Like your daughter, I am very leery about driving at night now, regardless of the road I am on. Let's all hope the rest of the winter brings us safe driving! I hope your daughter was OK.
