Medical and personal news...

Yesterday was a maze of confusion for my brain and it's taken a few hours and some sleep to register it all.

We went to the endocrinologist. Hubby is off of insulin now and on a new drug called Byetta. It just came out in June and for diabetics that can still produce a small amount of insulin on their own. So far today hasn't gone very well. His blood sugars are above 300 everytime we have checked them and I called the doctor late this afternoon. He advised him to take a shot of fast acting insulin to supplement the Byetta for today and keep close check on it. He may go into hypoglycemia because of the insulin. It's been a tiring day for both of us on this account.

The new cardiologist came next. We had been waiting all summer for the Congestive Heart Failure clinic he usually goes to, to schedule his ablation on the left area of his heart to burn out the electrical impulses and let the pacemaker do it's job. Well, this new cardiologist says it is a very good thing that it was not scheduled. Hubby is TOO HIGH RISK for that procedure and it probably would not have gone well if they had proceeded in his opinion.

He is now scheduled for a right heart ablation, which takes only an hour opposed to the 6-7 hour left heart ablation. They will be burning only one of his main nodes which in 99-100% of the cases so far has taken care of the interuption in the pacemaker pacing the heart. He will still be at risk for a heart attack, stroke or other complication but this procedure sure sounds better than the one before.

He will be totally dependent on the pacemaker after this procedure however and is very worried about that aspect. He wanted to know whether his heart would just quit if something ever went wrong with the pacemaker. The doctor said, no, you will have time to get to a medical facility if that ever happens. Your heart rate will go into the low 30's but you will not have heart failure immediately. That relieved his mind somewhat.

He is scheduled for the 16th. I would appreciate your prayers. This is just another uphill battle on the roller coaster we have been on since his first heart attack 11 years ago. Hopefully all will turn out okay and we will be home the following day.
