Legs and Puke

As some of you are aware, I've started my new workout regimen. If you weren't aware, you are now.

Yesterday was my first leg day. It really wasn't that bad of a planned event. I was to perform Barbell squats, Leg extensions, Ham curls, and calf raises. Simple right?

Since I hate squats, I saved those for last. I started with calf raises, as it was the only machine available at the given time. I simply did three sets of 10, with a 90 sec rest between the sets. I moved up only 10 pounds per set. They must've atrophied a lot on me over my short break (5 months - yes i was lazy). By the third set, I got to my 5th rep and had to pause. My entire legs were shaky. My calfs felt as if they were on fire. I had to crawl off of the machine to achieve my footing.

I moved from that to leg extensions. Nothing was exciting about this excersise at all, but the fact that it was 5 drop sets. That basically means that you divide the weight that you are using by two. I started really heavy for 15 reps. It sucked. I had 0 sec's of rest between the sets. Yes, they too were on fire.

I moved from that to Ham curls. It was the same pattern as the leg extensions.

Then... Shit! Squats. Let me digress.

When I workout, I eat 6 times per day. It's often very hard to schedule this in the beginning of my regimen b/c I simply forget to eat. Yesterday, I forgot. On my way to the gym, I gulped down a meal replacement shake. I knew that it was only my third meal of the day, and I didn't want to have to wait an hour after my workout to eat, as I might've only gotten four meals in.

I added my weight onto the smith machine. It wasn't a lot of weight, but I knew that I needed to crank out 5 sets. I took the bar and performed 15 very controlled reps. I added more weight and waited 60 secs. I then performed 12 very controlled reps, making sure that I counted to three on the down portion (eccentric) of the lift. I added more weight and waited 90 secs. I performed 10 more reps. I waited 120 secs... I added more weight and performed 8 reps. I added more weight, knowing that I only had 8 more reps to go till I could get the hell out of the gym. I was already slightly light headed.

Then it came... As I approached the bar, I belched a couple of times. I drank about 3 gulps of water, as I was sweating a lot. I took the bar and raised it. I controlled it down. My breathing was very heavy. (smoking does not help in working out) 7 more to go. I performed another controlled 3 count down. Pause. I try to burst up, but there was no burst. It was laborious! I even had to divert my eyes from looking out in front of me to that of the ceiling. (one actually can fool ones self into thinking this works) Up! 6 more to go. My head is feeling really dizzy as my breathing was extremely heavy. Again, down. Whine up. Down. Up. Rep 5... Down! Grunt up. BELCH. WTF??? (please don't fart!) I completed my exercise... It called for failure. I could not have squeezed out another (excercise - not toilet issues) rep if my life depended on it! Good guess on the weights. My book was on the floor, where I need to record my planned/actual events. I lean over to get my book... Shit! It's jumping around on me. My depth perception is off. I'm falling. Ok, nobody saw me... (I hope anyway, b/c that girl on the tread mill is hot!) I go to record my events, but my arms are freaking trembling! I just did a leg workout, and my fucking arms are retarded! Belch coming up... Oh, for the love of all that is fucking holy!!!! Run away! Run away!!!! I ran out to the front door (50 yards, maybe) got to the parking lot and lost every ounce of food in my stomach!

Some of you are going to wonder if this is worth it... Yes! Let me explain. tillerbabe can probably explain this in further detail, but the theory is this. The leg group of muscles are the largest on your entire body. Therefore, when you work them out hard, your body is burning an absurd amount of calories all at once. You probably will not achieve this w/ an upper body workout, but it's not too uncommon to experience this on a leg workout. The only thing that I lost out of the whole thing was probably the nutrition value of that shake.

In short, I puked. That really is embarrasing and disgusting, but I got in one hell of a workout. I hope to puke again next time!!

Dayum aas.....talk about dedication. I stop when I start to feel like I'm over doing it, lol.

And yes, smoking does NOT help in the workout process.

I really should have, but I needed to know my limits... I think I found it.

Squats first.....they are the most complete (and you're most focused at the begining of the workout)....if your doing machine squats adjust your legs forward from under the bar to change the focus of the wieght.

BTW--You should have puked right there under the bar and then pushed up one more rep......

aascrompn replies on 5/2/2006 11:06 am:
I do adjust my feet forward to hit the quad harder...

How the hell would you know? You are only 3'1"...

Wow, you really are dedicated, but I would have stopped before I felt like I had to puke

Ummmm do you think that rollerblading 4 miles will help get my legs in shape?

aascrompn replies on 5/3/2006 6:40 am:
It's just puke. It's really no big deal. If it were blood, then I would think about laying off of it a bit, but I have a competition to win and my New One to try and impress.

I don't think it would hurt, but I am a firm believer in sticking to basic lifts. Leg presses, squats, leg extensions, Ham curls, leg lunges, calf raises, Hack squats, dead lifts, etc... These are what I would stick to. Trust me when I say that it doesn't take much to get them built. Also, once you start to build them, it really makes losing fat sooooooo much easier, b/c it's such a large area of your body and really burns cals.

I wonder if you will get a new audience by using the word "puke" in your title.
If you thought that was bad, just wait until tomorrow! You should really be feeling it!

aascrompn replies on 5/3/2006 6:42 am:
I thought puke made a pretty good title... LOL - There are a lot of fetishes out there, so maybe I started a new one??

Yes, today kind of sucks, but not as bad as it could've been. I have taken no aspirin or advil and can still move. I anticipated this and ran last night. I did NOT run long, just long enough to get some of the lactic acid moving. I think that helped a lot!

Wow, sounds like you had a helluva workout! Speaking of which, I need to start working out! Care to join me? (As long as there aren't anymore (icky) bodily functions, of course!)

aascrompn replies on 5/3/2006 6:50 am:
Care to join you?? Absolutely. Bend over to get a nice stretch in and I'll be right there. You don't like bodily fluids?? I can make sure that it's centralized next time I shoot!

I nearly puked today but that was from last nights red wine.

On a serious note though, if you puke, don't you just loose that few small meals you needed for nutrition? Me thinks that the puking is not such a great idea....

aascrompn replies on 5/3/2006 6:52 am:
Puking is not ideal, but it lets you know that you really got a great workout in.

Did he say: "asspukin" OMG!!! MyRealLoverOne Dude! I've come close..but only during contest prep. Remember: What you do in the gym isn't the most important thing. What you do out of the gym, ie EATING and SLEEPING correctly will get results!!! Asspuker!!! (Quit eatin ass..you'll be "ok")

aascrompn replies on 5/3/2006 6:54 am:
Yes, he did!!!

I love that you wrote about it happening when you're not training. I've actually gone from 5 hours of sleep (sometimes less) to that of a consistant 7 now. I read somewhere that you should get a minimum of 6 hours.

Fine, no more ass for me!

Watch those shakes. My hubby tried them once, got violently ill, and the shakes, all at once... on a trip, in a van, with another couple! It was ugly...

aascrompn replies on 5/3/2006 6:56 am:
Thanks for the heads up! I was actually very successful two years ago using the shakes. I use a balanced shake, not just a protein shake. It's also very important to see what kind of protein one is ingesting. I only use the stuff w/ whey and casine (spelling) and not one that states "blended protein". Blends can wreak havoc on your GI. Thanks for saying hello!

aascrompn replies on 5/3/2006 6:58 am:
Well, I'm on the right track... I will keep everyone abreast of whether or not I'm making any kind of gains. I did just enter the gym's competition for the best transformation. $5000 on the line. I've seen the other contestants, and I believe I have an amazing shot. I've been lifting my whole life, but I now really understand my body and I think I have an edge in that regard.

I woke my kids up laughing so hard this morning. I don't know if it was intended to be funny, but the idea of you working on getting buffed, eyeing the hot girl on the treadmill and then puking your guts out just struck me as incredibly funny.

Thank you for sharing.
