Afghanistan's internationally propped government has pledged to give $100,000 to help victims of Hurricane Katrina, The United States embassy said on Sunday.

India pledges $5 mn Katrina relief operations

President Hamid Karzai made the pledge in a letter sent to US Ambassador Ronald Neumann. 'On behalf of the US embassy, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to the people of Afghanistan,' Neumann said in a statement.

"Their compassion and generosity bears testimony to the strength of the ties between our two peoples.'

Its a crazy world don't you think...Afghanistan's cash-strapped government relies heavily on financial aid from the United States and elsewhere. Most of the country is impoverished and there is little infrastructure outside of a handful of cities and yet they are giving money to the richest country in the world.

I really dont know what to think...

I'm thinking that the structure of international economics is taking on a very specific shape - that of a spider web.

This reminds me of the presents I used to buy my mom with the monthly wage she gave me. I'm sure she would be content with an inexpensive self-made drawing, but I always have been rather stupid and material.

For most of these countries , it's a token sum, a way of showing solidarity.

I'd like to write something extremly political, but this is the wrong forum ,

Its ironic that the US government was very hesitant about helping the poor of the world during G8 discussions earlier this year, and now accepts help from the poorest countries in the world.

I feel such sympathy for all the people whose lives have been torn apart by this huge catastrophy, I can only imagine the suffering they have been through this last 7 days.

The Afgans I met are some of most hospitible and friendly people I've ever met in my lifetime. They will take food from their plates and give it to you. The $100k is what they can afford, and it is a token of their generosity. Amazing. A refusal of their generosity would amount to a public insult.

Fidel Castro is listed by Forbes as one of the richest men on earth, with more that $5b in assets. His people live on an allowance of less that 2 lbs of chicken a month.

The G8 convention is aimed at spending missions in Africa. The world has spent billions in Africa with much of it going into the pockets of the dictators while the people suffer. The rise of democracy and the free enterprise system is the best thing that can happen to African nations, not spending more for their opressive dictators.

My apologies, ladies. I dislike the politization of natural disasters and terrorist acts as much as anyone, especially when there are innocents hurt. It wasn't worth a response.

I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where.
I love you straightforwardly, without complexities or pride;
so I love you because I know no other way
