Coffee and Danes

The Danes and I have have many things in common one of those things is...we both like to draw pictures of religious figures and post them on the world wide web, in my case on AdultFriendFinder. The Danes like to post in a language that is known as Dutch but that is really spoken by no one of any consequence, but a picture tells a thousand words, and that's what really matters.

Here is one of the pictures I have drawn...some several years was an image put in my head by the baby Jesus and he swears to me that it's based on a vision he had some time ago. The picture is of Mohammed driving a car full of explosives into a building! If you look very closely, you'll see that Mohammed is driving some kind of English car cause he's on the wrong side... That was actually a mistake, it was supposed to be a Hummer but I can't draw very well.

The sun represents God and he's laughing because that's a building full of Jews! Silly Mohammed, you try to kill Christians and only get Jews.

The picture is much larger in real life, I suspect Al Qaida is doing something with magic AdultFriendFinder blog-ink to make it so you can't really see the details. Its the same ink that makes comments and entire blogs disappear. Click on it if you care to see the smiling face of the Mohammed and Coffee cynicism.

Liefs and insjallah

The Danes have one of the oldest civilizations in the world....never amounted to much...just longivity....and breeding lots of folks...Only a few moments in the sun....even there art and cartoons are seldom seen in the world today....Image a nation being known only for the works of Hans Christian Anderson....Now their neighbors to the south....there are some nutty folks...tried their hand twice at world conquest...fucked it up both times...but at least they brew decent beer.

I know written by a truly smug Yankee...I drink it hot and black

Nipa, we have been through, whose we ?. Certainly not butchered kids in arabic/muslim lands, i dont know your we. Personally im tired of all the flippancy about whatever ppl may or may not take too seriously. Live and let live, and fix our own houses first.

And if you choose to take the piss...well do it to your own first.

Good post, Coffee. Irony and humour are by far the best ways of raising those things that free-speaking cultures have unease about. It is important that we maintain them and are not coerced by death threats, the actions of another culture that ultimately is less comfortable about how it integrates with individual life, liberty and the pusuit of happiness.

There is a long-lasting tradition in both Holland and Denmark of allowing individual liberty. Arguably the longest in Europe and something to be proud of. This is at odds with any form of crusading evangelism, and we need to remember that were it not for their aversion to such free-thinking the pilgrims of the Mayflower would have stayed in Holland, their first port of call and first attempt at setting up a religiously driven colony.

Where there are two world views, one that encourages individualism and free expression as part of a healthy and wholesome society and is willing to pay a price for it at times, the other that is highly prescriptive and proscriptive - in my mind to the point of the absurd - and that holds blasphemy (when all's said and done is a part of free speech) as a capital crime there is going to be a collision.

What matters is that we do hold our right to draw cartoons, and write accounts, make comedy shows and so on that seriously question our worries and anxieties. Of course they will offend some but free speech always does. We don't have to buy newspapers, read books or watch TV shows if we don't want to, not because a bully threatens us.

We must remember that there are such human beings as tolerant muslims and I am referring to the islamists, the extremist element, which sadly have too large a voice these days. Personally I think any human life holds more sanctity and value than any image of Mohammed, however blasphemous. Sadly, those who are protesting most loudly are those who will be endorsing the next indiscriminate bombing or kidnap and beheading. We are only listening to these people because they scare us, not because their value system can truly compete with our own.

warm xx

OK So what do I think about the cartoons? If they were designed to be offensive or to "push the limits" then they shouldn't have been printed. I believe that free speach is an absolute right but with every right there is a duty. That duty includes, amongst other things, the duty to exercise the right responsibly.

I believe the cartoon was aimed at extremists who use Islam to justify their violence and in that respect I agree with the sentiment behind the cartoons.

But we must never forget, and being Irish I can never forget, that Islam is not the only religion or belief that has been abused in this way.

From Northern Ireland right back to the Crusades, and probably before, Christianity has been the excuse for extreme violence and intolerence. Yet the majority of Christians have been peaceful and tolerant, well maybe not tolerant but forgiving at least.

Then tonight I heard on the news that a Danish embassy was burnt down. What sort of answer is that? "You call our religion violent and this offends us so much that we will provide you with a violent response". Extremists playing into the hands of extremists again.

is it time for us pragmatic moderates to put our foot down? Time to tell the American extremists that enough is enough? Time to tell the Islamic extremists that enough is enough?

At the end of the day we must listen to the great prophet Elvis Costello and ask ourselves "What's so funny about peace, love and understanding".

And he was Irish as well.

End of rant.

p.s. In the future can someone make sure that I have not partaken of the fermented grape before I type this stuff. Please!!!
