Answer Coffee Question

If you tap against a cup of coffee when you add milk powder, the pitch changes.

Why is that?

A: Additional air is brought into the coffee, thus changing the speed of sound in the cup of coffee.
B: The fat in the milk powder changes the frequency response of the coffee in the cup
C: The dissolution of the milk powder cools down the coffee, thus changing resonance frequency of the cup of coffee

Here it comes...

This problem has been the subject of scientists for quite some time. In 1969 scientists of the Institute for Geophysics and Planetary Science in San Diego (USA) solved the problem.
Milk powder particles when put in brewed coffee, contain a lot of small air bubbles on their surface. The speed of sound in air is no less than 4 times lower than in brewed coffee. If the coffee water contains numerous small air bubbles, the speed of sound in a cup of coffee will diminish dramatically. So, the lower the speed of sound in a cup of coffee, the lower the number of vibrations per second will pass through a cup of coffee. The pitch or frequency of sound is determined by the number of vibrations per second: the lower the number of vibrations per second, the lower the pitch. Because small air bubbles decrease the speed of sound, they also cause the pitch of sound of a cup of coffee to decrease. A small teaspoon of milk powder is enough to change the pitch thirty fold, while the volume of air bubbles is no more than 1 percent in cup of perfectly brewed CnC's cup of coffee....

Answer (A) is correct.

Ps...Papyrina, you are very right, why on earth would one use milkpowder ????

It's amazing what one can find in those blogs. Since I love scientific questions I love this blog.
And for all those who only want to read nothing but sex I like to say that there is also a time between.

I bet my tax dollars funded that research grant. But great thanks to CoffeeNoCream for finding/sharing this information -- My copy of the research results were obviously lost in the mail.
