Bill's Most Excellent Birthday Adventure

Oddly enough, no one named Ted was involved.

I departed my new home of CT at about noon, and headed to my old home, Philly. The day didn't get off to the best start, cause my buddy Joe was still sick, so he couldn't come with me. Also, my backup plan for a different guest for the day fell through, so I ended up eating the cost of one of the tickets, and going myself.

I figured it would take about four hours for the trip. Boy, was I wrong. New York City is a traffic nightmare, and the Jersey Turnpike was just as bad, plus it smelled, but then almost all of Jersey smells. The turnpike starts out as I-95, but never lets you know until it's very much too late, that about halfway down, it stops being I-95. So I got stuck with a few extra tolls, and had to go to Delaware, and double back up I-95 to get to Philly. The trip took seven hours.

I arrived just as the game was starting, and met up outside the stadium with my lifelong friend, Alex. He moved to Delaware when we were both starting 7th grade. He happened to sit next to me on the bus, and his desk was next to mine in homeroom. We've been friends ever since. I keep in better touch with him than some of my high school and college friends. We hadn't seen each other in over 5 years, so it was awesome to meet up.

The game was fun, even though the Phillies lost. I didn't care. I was in the new ballpark, seeing a game up close with my best friend. Plus I got my first real cheesesteak in as long as I can remember.

In the stadium, there is a Build-A-Bear shop that sells custom Phillie Phanatic dolls. My mom went to high school with the guy who plays the Phanatic, so I thought it'd be cool to get her one for her birthday in October. The attendents saw me and Alex, and I'm sure they thought we were a gay couple. When making the bear/phanatic, I was put through some pretty embarrassing motions, including kissing the heart, rubbing it, and placing it on my head and spinning. If it wasn't my b-day, and I was in such a good mood, I wouldn't have done it.

The advantage of coming down alone was that I could enjoy the night life. Alex allowed me to craah at his place. His girlfriend and a couple other girls picked us up and we went to a popular sports bar in Newark, DE, the town where I was born and raised (I say Philly's my home, but the whole area is, especially seeing as how I've never actually lived in Philly).

I got blitzed. They have "beers" at this bar that start at 24oz for $2! How awesome is that. Alex introduced me to all his college friends, who happened to be there, told them where I worked, and we all mingled. It was the most amazing thing. Hot women were actually talking to me, without having to provide my credit card number. Few people have seen me drunk. I get so much more fun. I lose my inhibitions and just cut loose.

We went back to this girl's apartment, a block away from the bar. We had a couple more drinks and had some laughs. Then Alex's girlfriend drove us back to his place. It was around 2am, and I crashed on the couch.

This morning, I woke up at around 9:30. No hangover, I'm never hung over. I also never have a memory loss. In fact my memory is enhanced. Alex and I had some breakfast at Denny's, and then I had to run an errand.

Those who read the blog know that I was inspired to work out by the death of my friend Rick. I felt I needed to visit his mother, my old babysitter as a kid, and offer my condolences. She wasn't home, just her husband, who, in all due respect, is a worthless drunken hick. He called her, see if she'd come home to see me, but couldn't reach her, so I simply passed along the message and left.

I went back to Alex's, and we went out to see "Ricky Bobby." I'd already seen it, but he hadn't, and it was so funny, I gladly watched it again.

Then it was time to part and head back. I had one more thing I needed to do.

Five years ago, just before my birthday, my grandmother died. I lived with her till I was 13. I even went to the house where I grew up (four blocks from Alex's), and it's completely changed. My old basketball hoop's gone, the garage has been sealed, the only thing recognizeable was the old AC unit in the back. If there weren't a sign with the house number in the middle of the front yard, I wouldn't have known.

Anyway, my grandma hated my step-dad so much, that when she was on her deathbed, her dying wish was that he not attend the funeral. So, my aunt, in her infinite wisdom, did not even inform us of her passing until the day she was buried, two days before my 19th b-day. Happy fucking birthday. Since then, she's haunted me. Not like in a ghost way, but I see her in my dreams at least once a month. I talk to her. She consoles me. It's even inspired a script idea I had a while back. I wanted to see her grave at last. I never got to see her body, like I have with all my predeceased relatives. I never got my closure. I set out to find the cemetary where she's buried. Unfortunately, after an hour of searching New Castle County high and low, I couldn't find it. Next time.

So at about 6pm, I headed back north. Perhaps I could make the M&G late if I made good time. Well, at least this time I was able to stay on I-95 the whole way. Unfortunately, due to an hour-long logjam at the George Washington Bridge, I lost a lot of time. Oddly enough, if there wasn't a toll plaza for the bridge, there wouldn't have been a traffic jam. Stupid greedy New Yorkers.

I got back in at about 11pm. With little to no traffic, the trip only takes five hours. My ass is sore, and my leg is cramped, but I'm home, and my b-day passed with flair, phanatics, and plenty of booze.
