Too late for The Wizard...

She had gone as she had come, this visage from another place and time. He had conjured her from another world, and while, for a brief spell, she had filled his dark world with all her light, he should have known that such a light could only vanish without even pausing first to dim. But the memory remained; it would not be erased; and in that was the rub, for he had fallen in love with this flighty spirit, this creation he had brought forth to take on a form all her own and beyond his control and ability to keep. A greater darkness was his now, for her light had shown him how dark was his castle and how empty his room. Try as he might, no conjurings brought forth the spirits he sought. His power diminished, he ruefully remembered that this was, after all, a fairy tale, and in no fairy tale or legend could he recall the wizard winning the heart of the princess. That was the role of the young dashing prince, and as he considered the steps that had brought him to this place, he thought, no, it had never been a palace, this castle of his. Its stone and rust were old before he was born. And though he had parted the forest of thorns and slain the dragon, his Beauty would sleep on forever.

I wonder if it ever can have a different ending. Happily ever after? Not likely. But happily for a little while would be nice.
