Life is Difficult - the Road Less Traveled

Life is difficult. This is a great truth ‒ one of the greatest truths. It is a great truth because once we indeed see this truth we transcend it.Once we truly know that life is difficult ‒ once we truly understand and accept it ‒ then life is NOT difficult. Because once accepted, the fact that life is difficult no longer matters.

So begins the great book by H. Scott Peck called the Road Less Traveled. Those words blew me away when I read that so many years ago. I did not understand it then but I do now- after a divorce, 4 job changes, moving 5 times in 5 years and other major changes in my life.

The key is discipline and there are four tools that help. The first is delaying gratification…being willing to experience pain first allows us to experience pleasure (and not in an alt.com B&D way ‒ that’s not what I am talking about here). The second tool is Accepting Responsibility. Stop blaming others ‒ your parents, friends, society ‒ and be willing to own our problems. The next is Dedication to the Truth (reality). To see the world as it truly is ‒ not how we wish it would be. The last is balance ‒ to give up something in order to gain something of importance.

Love provides the motivation for discipline. Love is the will to extend oneself for the purpose of nurturing one’s own or another’s spiritual growth. Love requires action. It is very risky to love ‒ we must give up our selves to love deeply…risking standing alone and face the issue of our commitment to those we truly love.

This is a challenging book that will require thought and soul searching but one well worth the effort. As Eli Wiesel said “We must understand that there can be no life without risk ‒ and when your spirit is strong ‒ everything else is secondary ‒ even the risks
