This ain't Funky Town...
This ain't Funky Town...
So i've had my nap and a fat bath and babe am i ready to rock 'n roll !!!!!
its weekend time again here in the ME and i have recovered somewhat from my recent travelling, which included among other places, the almost-world-famous city of DUBAI.
They say that Dubai has more-cranes-per-capita than any other city in the world. by that i mean the working-construction-type cranes - u know those big metal things u use to build an office block with. certianly there were about a million more high-rises on the Jumeirah strip than when i was last in town (about 3 months ago. Dubai is really amazing in this respect, with so much real-estate development happening and planned it probably is the biggest construction site in the world. And nothing cant be done - undersea hotels, ski-slopes (in the desert for f***-sakes!) an island in the shape of the world, 2 palm tree islands the size of a small european country, enough conferences to keep a seminar junky on speed for a year, and a gazillion hotels - all always fully booked.
Sound a bit like Vegas doesnt it?
Its just sooo ...........plasticky. Its so hot & humid half the year you cant step outside without wetting your pants (and not in a good way either). and the beaches are crap. Ok, not as crap as the beaches in bahrain, but crap nontheless. The water is so murky from all the dredging you cant see your toes when your standing ankle-deep. and if u want to stand where you can see your toes - then you burn the bottom of your feet of in about a second. Its not cheap. Its 100% totally false. it just aint got no soul, brother.
they say Dubai wants to be the next Ibiza - and it probably will be - but its not for me.
uh oh - gotta go....back later..

I remember "skiing" once outside of Al Budoor ! I visited the Emirates many times in the mid to late '90's via port visits to Jebel Ali. We only made it into Dubai to visit the British Seaman's Center a few times due to international relations 'tween the US Navy and the Emirates.|
It CERTAINLY wasn't Hawaii, Singapore, Hong Kong, or Perth... but it was nice to put my legs on solid ground after 3 or 4 months at sea.
Sadly I never got into Manama Bahrain: the one time we pulled in was Christmas of 1996 and I'd been flying and on watch for 12 hour shifts for the last 30 days straight... So instead I crawled in my rack (bed) and slept for a solid 36 hours!
Well Tigerlilly I wish you the BEST of luck in your frolics and fun there in the Gulf States.

Cant agree more with you.. Bahrain Sucks... There is no decent dance floor around here. Even the countries like Malawi & Mozambique has some great dance floors and night life....|
Well obviously Im a frustrated out-of-towner who has to spend another six months here (for work )...
As you said all the glamour is in the buildings and concrete aint gonna change THIS desert into a CITY as it did to Viva Las Vegas...
Keep blogging.. Will sure checkout what u wrote next...
