Yawn ...

It's not often I feel sorry for the Leader of the Free World, dear reader, but this morning I confess that I did feel a pang of sympathy.

For those of you who haven't seen the news, a Reuters photographer took a close-up of a note that George W. Bush wrote to his Secretary of State, Condoleeza Rice, during the headline UN summit of world leaders. It read, "I think I may need a bathroom break? Is this possible? W."

Now I've sat in enough conferences and seminars to know that a demanding bladder is one of the more difficult things to cope with when you simply cannot leave the room. It may be painful but you can usually manage by dint of crossed legs, gritted teeth and simple willpower.

Far worse, in my humble experience, is when you start falling asleep (seems to happen particularly for some reason after three or four lunchtime gins). It's beyond ones control - the depths of the brain say "sleep" and the head starts to nod, the eyes start to close. It can become a severely career-limiting development.

Even worse if you start to snore ...

How many of you have sat there jiggling a leg (or other selected body part) in the hope that conscious movement will stave off slumber? How many of you have pressed a sharp pencil into the hand in the hope that mild pain will release enough adrenalin to keep the sleep monkeys away? Have you sat with pen poised over pad in the hope that when your head droops forward it'll look like you're concentrating on what you've written? And praying that, come what may, you won't start to drool!

The only reliable method I've found to beat back Morpheus in these circumstances is to drink enough water - if there's any available - that the bladder fills to crisis point. I've never (yet) fallen asleep with my bladder screaming for release.

Which brings us right back to where I started.

Mind you, if we're talking about things not to do at conferences, I could bring up the day I was at an impressively high-level IBM function and was going down with a stomach bug. That would be the day I projectile-vomited over the seat in front ... which was occupied at the time.

Following that momentous event, I stopped wondering whether it was "possible" to go to the bathroom ...

The leader of the free world has to ask permission to use the bathroom......... what a sad, sad day.

Even my children, who are in elementary school do not have to ask. All they have to do is, take the pass from the hook, by the teachers desk.

Did Condi have to lead him to the potty, I wonder?

And, if yu recall yur ancient history, Bush Sr. once projectile vomited upon the Prime Minister of Japan.

44DD ... Well, at the risk of being vaguely political, GWB has never seemed very comfortable in unplanned situations. He doesn't seem to like stepping outside the script, if you like. And I can't see his staff telling him, "and if you need the bathroom ...". Of course, they probably will do in future!

BB ... He did, you're right! Hey, maybe I should apply for job of Leader of the Free World? Oh no, I'm not eligible am I? Not wealthy enough, for one thing

i really do not feel the least bit sorry for bush at all. as part of my political activity in cape town, we once held the city finance manager hostage for several hours and would not let him go to the toilet because he was instigating water cutoffs in the area (people had no water for drinking, washing or flushing toilets)(he called it credit control) -- he was red-faced and in agony -- we offered him an empty cooldrink bottle, but he refused it; someone went to fetch a bucket, but he refused that, the chairperson offered him a blanket to piss behind, still he refused. we all just laughed and laughed and laughed ... eventually we let him go piss outside under a tree ---!
