Unlucky Numbers?

It’s been particularly interesting being at work in the hospital today. It’s been interesting, specifically, talking to the staff who deal with the pregnant women on the verge of giving birth.

Apparently a number of them have been very concerned to make sure that they don’t give birth today. Why? Because it’s the 6th June 2006. That’s 06/06/2006. Or 6/6/6, the Number of the Beast.

It seems they’re concerned that the antichrist could be born today and they really, really don’t want their own child to fill that particular role. I can understand that they don’t want to bear the son (or, in these days of sexual equality, perhaps the daughter) of Satan … but the basic underlying assumption amazes me.

I would have liked to have asked a few questions to find out whether these people were (a) fundamentalist Christians, (b) people who think the Omen is a documentary or (c) stupid. Unfortunately I didn’t have that opportunity. I will check tomorrow though and if, by any chance, a boy of dark complexion called Damian has been born today I shall certainly let you know.

Jx

Free ... Which teaches you that you simply can't stop people doing what they want to do. Especially once they're adults!

Wacky ... Oh I have lots of faith. Just not in that!

Hot ... Perhaps it's not very Christian but I have to admit I did giggle for a moment at the thought of the look on the faces of the women who were told they were to be induced to make sure they gave birth on the 6th of the 6th 2006

Hotandhorny ... Frankly, given how bad I remember labour being for my wife when my son was born, I can only think that anyone who was that desperate to delay childbirth like that would merit beatification!

Farm_Girl ... Not a good situation to find yourself in but, as you say, at least you know what to do. And at least you were there to help.

Swede ... I know that current thinking is that the number is "616" rather than "666" but I thought the manuscript that changed our view of that particular piece of gospel was a fairly recent discovery so I guess you can't blame people for not knowing. Mind you, it does make me wonder what else has been mistranslated over the years ...
