The Sound of Silence

At first I thought it was a joke.

It popped up onscreen: an advert for silent ringtones for mobile phones. A guaranteed success at home or at school. Impossible to hear by parents of teachers.

Cute gimmick, I thought, but at £3 each or £9 per week I think I'll stick to putting my phone on vibrate or even silent should the need arise. I can do that for free.

Then I noticed the small message at the bottom: Ringtone has a frequency of 15Khz or higher. Something tingled at the back of my mind so I decided to dig a little.

And what did I find but another ageist conspiracy. It seems that as we age we lose the ability to hear sounds at that frequency, usually by the age of 20 or so. Given the way that life works, children will be able to hear the ringtones but most teachers and parents won't (though given the depressingly high rate of teenage pregnancies in this country definitely not all parents).

So, it's a valid and rather clever offer. I can't stop kids hearing ringtones without me being aware of them. On the other hand, the though of buying one myself and continually playing it to annoy these young whippersnappers is, ohhhh, so tempting!

I have just transferred a M4A to my cellphone and set it as my new ringtone today. Been looking for the title and artiste since June. Now I'm all hyper when my phone rings

I wouldn't mind doing a survey of ringtones. I'm certain that you can tell a lot about people from the ringtone that they choose.

Mind you, in a lot of cases what you can tell is that they're irritating individuals!

Did you know that there is a device called the Mosquito that was created in the UK to keep the kids from hanging around in public places? I just a saw a piece on it on the news this weekend. In the same bit, they talked about the cell phone ringer too.

The Mosquito thing is completely inaudible to those of us over 25 or 26 but annoys the heck out of those under those ages. And it seems to work.

Later!

I saw a news piece about the Mosquito several months ago but at that time the ringtone wasn't mentioned.

It does make me think, though, that perhaps I should just buy a Mosquito instead of one of these ringtones

Well.....I suspect one could argue that they are not complying with disability laws

I have high frequency hearing loss and so can't hear most sounds at the upper end of speech frequency (ie women talking, ringtones , computer games etc etc). So....should I order the ringtone and then sue because they sold me silence

TheQuietGuy2005 replies on 8/28/2006 1:52 pm:
You can't hear women talking? And just how do you feel about that?

Unfortunately, I don't think you can sue: you're a parent and the advert specifically says you won't be able to hear the ringtones. Nice try though!

i think all people should have this sort of ringtone compulsary purchased for them. That way I never have to hear the irratating fucking things again.

got that!

I binned my mobile some time ago and life is better for it.

I know exactly what you mean.

In many ways I'd love to get rid of my mobile too ... but what that really means is that I'd like to be able to have only certain selected individuals able to contact me and DEFINITELY not work!

Sassybelle ... That's okay, I've figured it out. You're obviously referring to the guy who owns the whole Web site. I'm sure he's far better at getting sexy than I would be
