Snip! Snip! Part Two

Think of me tomorrow at around 1.45pm, British Summer Time. At that point, a nurse should be telling me to get undressed, following which a local anaesthetic will be applied to a normally private part of my anatomy and a doctor will take a knife to said part.

Yes, dear reader, tomorrow is V-Day: Vasectomy Day.

Since I first wrote about this back in August (Snip! Snip!) I have received no end of comments from concerned onlookers.

Yes, some have been supportive and positive. One person told me he jogged home from his (though whether I'm meant to take that entirely literally is another matter). Others have said there's nothing to it: there may be a little discomfort but nothing major.

But then, of course, there are those who seem determined to worry me. The phrase "balls like grapefruit" is not, it seems to me, designed to reassure. Nor does it help when people cringe and tell me it'll be agony or that the swelling will probably go down in a couple of weeks. Nor did it help to hear the story of the guy whose incisions got infected ... that really was the stuff of nightmares! And people seem determined to dwell on all the other things that can go wrong up to and including eternal, inexplicable pain. "Are you sure?", they ask. Well, I was ...

No, I remain convinced that this is the right thing to do and I am approaching it with a positive attitude. I do not intend to have any real problems afterwards. I shall take the appropriate anti-inflamatories and painkillers and I will be back at work on Thursday.

What worries me more at the moment is the local anaesthetic. I was advised to shave the relevant part 48 hours before the op to avoid the skin being too sensitive to the alcohol-based wipes. At that time I was simply not up to it. I shaved this morning instead, a little over 24 hours before ... and now I can't help wondering just how much those buggers are going to STING!!

Still, if that's the worst part of the whole experience, I will be quite happy ...

I went with my Ex-Hubby to his Vasectomy and was in the room with him through the entire procedure. I can tell you, he is one man that has an EXTREMELY low tolerance for pain. He was able to manage all aftercare pain on nothing more than Tylenol. But the two things that I will say that 100% difference in his recovery.

1 ) Wear regular brief underwear (tighty-whites) the give full support to your testicles after the procedure and willaid in the circulation of blood flow and healing. This will enable you to heal faster and will keep less strain and pressure on your testicles afterward. Do not let them hand free, loose fitting boxers or boxer briefs do not provide the support they need to heal and will cause them to swell and will also cause the blood to pull down into the sac. This is painful. Not a good idea.

2 ) Purchase a cloth covered ice pack I suggest 3 or 4 of them. This way you can keep one of them inside of your briefs directly on your testicles to keep the swelling at an absolute minimum. If you do this for the first solid 48 hours. You will have very very little swelling. My ex had none at all. Rotating the ice packs so that he had one on him at all times kept him comfortable. Numb and comfortable.

The most he felt during the procedure was slight tugging which made him feel a little nauseated, inside of his belly because he could feel the pulling and the smell when the doc cauterized (burned) the tubes closed. He wanted them cauterized rather than sewn for no chance of ever having and accidental reconnection of the tissues.

Well, I hope that I gave you some useful tips. Good luck tomorrow, and I hope that you have someone to drive you home, the meds for the procedure can make you a little dopey.

Take care!

I respect you for having this simple procedure done instead of making your partner go through major surgery in a tubal litigation..nothing says I love you baby like a vasectomy..My husband found the best relief was a 6 pack of cold beer between his legs as he went fishing in his boat on the lake..good luck sweety

Hmmmmmm. *thinks a little*

Have you considered saving a sperm sample for posterity in case you should find someone worthy of a joint creation (say, aiming for Daughter of Quiet)?

I mention it just in case you should ever want to do so, it's always good to have the option handy...

TQG, the best thing to use is frozen vegetables... post-op, that is. Just remember to wear a raincoat until your count drops to zero. The most important thing to do, however, is GO BACK for your sperm count. Otherwise, you may end up like me.... with a small surprise 6 years later!!!

*smiles, hugz n kisses..... and of course, good thoughts*

Hope it went or goes well TQG. Hopefully you'll see this in time to make sure they look for a THIRD vas deferens. While rare, you'd hate for them to miss it and have to go thru the procedure twice. Speaking from experience....NOT FUN! LOL!! OUCH!!

Thanks for all the good wishes!

Ideal, Valleyrat ... Thanks! Just the sort of thoughts I need to take with me

Princess ... Nice thought but I'm too old to want to go down that road again. I adore children but I'll settle for adoring the one and a bit I already have and other peoples' in future.

BarbieBunny ... Thanks for the offer but I think I'll stick to the doc that's already lined up! However, should I ever decide on castration, I know who to ask

Sportsfan ... Don't worry, I'll be sure to "stand up and be counted" ... the whole point of the exercise is to avoid surprises!

Congratulations on your decision. I applaud all who make the choice for voluntary sterilization and then get jealous, as a tubal ligation costs so much here. I won't be cheering for you, as I hope to actually be asleep by then.

The horror stories... We hear them for everything. People tried to scare the shit out of me right before I had my first wisdom tooth out. The stitches were what hurt. When I went back 4 days later to complain about the pain, he told me I was a fast healer, took out the stitches and the pain was gone. I didn't even have swelling. I had them done one at a time and only one caused a problem and that one wasn't even surgically removed, but just a normal dental extraction.

People tell horror stories about apendectomies. Even having a boil lanced, you're going to hear horror stories. There are even acne treatment gone wrong horror stories.

Don't listen to them. I know someone who never wants to be a father again, but won't have a vasectomy, because of where they have to touch you. Complications are rare. Although, you will have to be tested in a few months, to make sure it didn't reverse itself. Even tubal ligations have been known to reverse when done improperly.

But here is wishing you no complications, minimum swelling and a jog home.

TQ - nothing to it - it doesn't make a vas deferens in the long run.
