Reap the Whirlwind

What happens when emotions fly?
Some things thrive while others die.
Nothing left unchanged will be
When feelings guide your destiny.

They lift you up, they cast you down:
Devil to angel, leader to clown.
They break your heart; can heal it too
In time for you to hurt anew.

The joy they bring can heal the pain
To start the cycle once again:
Inevitably Yang to Yin
Then round again, again, again.

Too strong to tame? Too blind to rule?
Emotions make the wise a fool.
They crush you like a juggernaut.
They addle minds and derail thought

So build those walls, protect your heart
And turn to ice - well that's a start.
You hide from pain but here's the price:
You lose the joy behind the ice.

And if it melts you find once more
Life still can hurt you as before
And unprepared you have to face
The fears that hiding won't erase.

And if emotions you ignore
They come back stronger than before
And when you least expect to fall
They pull you down, they make you crawl.

But then again ... the touch of a lover's hand against your skin, a baby's smile, the voice of one you care about or who cares about you, sunrise and sunset, dew on a rose petal, the scent of flowers, the warmth and comfort of a cuddle or a shoulder when you need it, a crackling fire, the warmth of the sun on your back, the satisfaction of a job well done, that lovely exhaustion after exercise, the smell of just-ground coffee or fresh-baked bread ...

Yes, some emotions ease our way -
They add the colour to our day.
Without this all we do's survive;
I'll risk the pain to feel alive.

To live without feeling either pleasure or pain is not living at all. Numbness is just that...nothing...I rather feel pain than nothing.

"A poem records emotions and moods that lie beyond normal language, that can only be patched together and hinted at metaphorically" -
