How to Win Friends and Influence People

Some time ago I happened to mention "that time I was sitting chatting to the naked stripper that I knew" (Hint? What hint?). This seemed to raise doubts about my truthfulness in the minds of several of you so, to honour a promise made in a rash moment, here is how it happened.

Way back when, freshly divorced for the first time, I moved into a flat in a rather rough council estate in South London. When I say "rather rough" I mean the sort of place where you always ran the risk of starting a night-time walk with more teeth than you finished it with. I'm only grateful that guns weren't as prevalent then as they are now.

I got lucky: several of the people in the flats near mine were well-known and respected and as I was befriended by them I was safer than many people. I only had to be careful rather than fearful.

One of the neighbours was a twenty-something lass who was studying law and, I discovered, funding her studies by stripping in local bars. And she was proud of what she was doing too - she saw it as a pragmatic, independent means to an end, nothing more nor less (and as it happens I hear she's a successful barrister now). Not being ashamed of her part-time career, she suggested that I went to watch her at work.

Now, being a shy type I refused. Being a forceful type, she kept insisting though and one lunchtime I eventually gave in.

Now, she was stunning: long ebony hair reached down to her waist, she had a curvaceous figure that went in at all the right points and exceptionally out at all the right points too; on top of that she had the kind of face, the mischievous smile and the glint in her eyes that could make a monk propose marriage. She radiated sensuality. When she danced and slowly disrobed, all eyes followed her around the room - except mine ... I couldn't help watching her audience, amazed that a friend of mine could have such an incredible impact.

Eventually she ran out of clothes, fortunately at just the same time that the song ended. Then she wandered around the pub, still naked, with an empty pint glass, collecting from the punters. Finally, she came over to me (her glass now full) and sat opposite me. The barman brought her a drink and we sat and chatted, discussing what I'd seen.

Gradually, I became aware that we were being watched. Not surprising, I suppose, given that she was still in a state of deshabille but it slowly dawned on me that they were also watching me ... with expressions of frank envy on their faces. It hadn't occurred to me - as far as I was concerned I was just chatting to my friend! Her drink drunk, she planted a gentle kiss on my cheek and went off to get dressed.

We went back to my flat and had coffee and then went about our lives. Did I make a pass? Yegods, no - I was far too shy to think I had a chance with a gorgeous girl like that. In retrospect ... ahhh, well, water under the bridge.

But there was one unexpected benefit: for some time after, the regulars at that pub were much keener to talk to me and I got bought quite a few free drinks too!

Dear ladies, you are right of course. For some reason, I have always made female (platonic) friends easily. It's the non-platonic ones I have problems with

I guess some people are born to be sex gods and others are born to be friends ... I suspect the latter is more rewarding in the long run.
