Day One - Autonomy Rules

I started my new job today.

I always knew it would be a little strange: I am, after all, the Systems Administrator for a system that doesn't yet exist!

As it turned out, it was a little stranger than that. Basically, no one has really given much thought to what I should be doing.

I asked what my official working hours are and was told that it doesn't really matter as long as I get the work done. But what work? I had one meeting to attend this morning (more as a listener than a speaker - good coffee though!) and I have one lined up tomorrow at which I might have more to contribute but apart from that ... I seem to have a completely blank slate. And no one seems particularly keen to give me things to do!

Please don't think I'm complaining. This sort of autonomy will suit me down to the ground - just as it's the kind of freedom I've always allowed my own staff in the past. It'll let me work in a way that will play to my strengths. But today it seems a little overwhelming ...

Still, plenty to read ... now, if only I can decode the acronyms ...

The first few days in a new job is always so overwhelming..Meeting who you work with, checking out your new work space and finally most important learning where the coffee is..Make sure to rest your brain each night Quiet..

*HUGS the Quiet One*

Good for you, you can mold the systems to your liking *mwahahaha*

Just take it easy this first week, meet your colleagues, learn the politics, and see who does and doesn't know what they're doing. Oh, and always keep a cup of coffee and a clipboard handy when walking about so you look really busy...

Thanks for all the good wishes!

Saddletrampsk, Princess and GB_Cple ... I must admit that it proved itself a hospitable and civilised place in that they showed me where to get coffee within 5 minutes of my arrival! Can't be bad, can it?

Polly ... Oh, the preparation wasn't wasted ... I can at least ask semi-intelligent questions and read the piles of documents that I've managed to get hold of. I count that as two successes! As for time for blogging and emailing, there certainly is ample time for that ... if I had a PC and a login ID, I might even be able to use the time in that way! I'd settle for a phone at the moment! At least I have a desk and a chair ...

Princess ... Your suggestions were noted. I took a clipboard in today and it certainly seemed to make me look far more at home

Helga ... The leave card has been shown to the boss and I fervently hope to have it returned, officially stamped, tomorrow.

Oh, I couldn't do that, Al ... the last thing the world needs is more of them!
