Are MP3s Bad for the Health?

I don't want to sound like a wimp but oooOOOooo owie owie ouch ouch ouch!

Can we get all the jokes out of the way about the lower pain threshold of men compared with women? When it comes down to it, I am never going to be able to experience the incomparable joy that is natural childbirth and there's really very little I can do about it (except to be suitably grateful!).

But pain is basically subjective and, wimp or not, I have to admit that my pierced nipple is hurting. It feels as if someone's been having a whale of a time playing with it (oh, how I wish) or maybe playing by hanging a whale from it.

It's been like this for a few days now. There's no sign of infection (after four years, I'd hope I'm well past that stage) but every now and then my nipple seems to become super-sensitive and any contact with it unleashes a wave of pain. Thank goodness I never had the Prince Albert done!

Ironically, it was only last week I was sitting in smug silence as two colleagues discussed how body piercings in general and any piercings at all in men were a useful way to aid in the early identification of idiots! Granted, lumps of metal embedded in the body pose unwelcome complications in an X-Ray department but I did think the summary of piercings as bringing nothing but pain and infection was well and truly misinformed.

I wasn't feeling quite so smug when the pain kicked in!

Anyway, back to the point: what has any of this got to do with MP3s? Well, you see, I think I've figured out that MP3s are the cause of my pain. No, really!

You see, as mentioned a while ago, I recently bought a new toy of the non-sexual variety. It's a PalmPilot TX which has all the usual calender, contact, notepad, spreadsheet and games and so on that you'd normally expect of a handheld PC but also shows videos and, crucially, plays MP3s. I'm using all of the features but I particularly like being able to listen to music on the move. I have, it is true, become an addict.

One friend says we're joined at the hip but this is wrong in one important way: we're actually joined at the nipple. In other words, I tend to carry it in the breast pocket of my shirt.

Now it's not heavy and it's not thick but it is a little larger than the typical MP3 player and so, I'm thinking, it's continually pressing and rubbing against my nipple. That has to be bad news, doesn't it?

Granted, the solution is relatively easy: always wear a jacket and carry the damn thing in a different pocket. Nonetheless, in my case at least, MP3s have been shown to be bad for the health.

Jx

Whatever you do, don't carry it in your trouser pocket if you do decide to get a Prince Albert!

Q...

I must admit,i didn't have you down as the pierced nipple type but i suppose thats what makes this site and possibly life in general all the more interesting.....and scarey!

Quite agree that the source of your pain and discomfort is the positioning of the mp3..."joggers nipple" springs to mind. All i can add is for christs sake....watch you dont get any of that Deep Heat any where near it....OUCH!!!!

Actually, young lady, I have two trouser pockets so I think I'd be safe as long as I choose carefully.

I still haven't quite ruled out the PA by the way

lol this is your comeupence I feel for being so smug about yours not hurting to those guys
so the moral of this story is... if you have your nipple pierced and you want to listen to music, put MTV on the tv and dont get an mp3 player
I know ... humility is a wonderful character trait and I intend to develop more of it as soon as possible! The problem with your suggestion, though, is it's very hard to carry MTV around on the train with me

My dear Free, you have to appreciate that men have a different perception of pain than women and ours, quite simply, is INFINTELY worse!

Mind you, in my own defence, I should point out that I have never denied the possibility of bra-related soreness (not in me though for what I hope are self-evident reasons).

I don't know what you need to know!

Ask and I'll (possibly) answer

Young man, that's one of the things that I like about having a hidden piercing: no one knows unless I want them to!

I've tried to explain this to Son of Quiet and it certainly put him off having his ear pierced ... I'm just not sure what seeds I might have planted for the future

As I'm too cheap to waste money on Deep Heat that's not a risk: I've told you, I'll take a massage from a nice pair of hands anyday

What a pretty nipple! Makes me want to be evil and tug on it.

Btw, just think how women feel when they have to wear their bras after getting their nipple(s) pierced. Geez, and all you have to do is move your MP3 player to another place, like perhaps find a way to clip it to your belt? Or as you mentioned, the other pocket. Silly man.

Later!

Well thank you for your compliment! I wouldn't usually complain at it being tugged but right now ... nooooooooo thanks

And of course it's obvious that I should carry my player somewhere else ... and, believe me, now I've figured out the cause of my pain I am doing so!

If I had an answer to give you, I would certainly do so.
