Texas vs NewYork

As you can probably tell from my name, TexasMar, I am from Texas. What you may not know is that I am living in New York, unless you check out my profile. This past weekend I was having a discussion with a friend of mine about the major culture shock that I went though when I moved up here. For me there was a HUGE difference between Texas and New York just in the vocabulary alone.

Here are a few examples:

Texas VS New York

House Shoes, Slippers
Tennis Shoes, Sneakers
Trash, Garbage
Colors, Crayons
Accross, Accrosst (For example: my
car is parked
accrosst the
the street)

We dont have one, Down Celler
(We dont have them
because the ground
is made of rock,
but if we did we would
say down in the celler)

Sack, Bag
Cart (shopping). Buggy
Coke Soda/Pop
(My Personnal
Favorite and
the topic of MANY
discussions),

Here are a few things I was totally surprised about. In Texas it is standard issue for a house to come with central heat and air conditioning. Most houses have electric heat and air as well. I had to learn what the difference between oil heating, gas heating, base-board heating, and I had never seen these old houses that had the units that you still had hand light. That was all forgein to me.

This may sound silly but all houses and apartments have dish washers in them....

I thought it was weird that no one parked their cars in the garage. I remember thinking why does no one park their cars in the garage when their is a foot of snow on the ground....they must like scraping off the car in 10 degree weather.

I was just wondering If I was the only one that has gone through such a major shock like this when they have moved from one place to anohter, or am I just weird?

"Cart (shopping). Buggy"

I have NEVER heard ANY New Yorker call a shopping cart a "buggy." Who have you been hanging out with?

"I had never seen these old houses that had the units that you still had hand light."

I have no idea what you're talking about; what is "hand light"?

Oh, and you forgot to mention wood heating. My grandma's house was heated by a wood furnace, MY house was heated by wood furnace when I was a kid. We'd spend the fall cutting down, chopping, splitting, hauling, and stacking wood. Then we'd spend all winter carrying it from the outside to the basement.

VooDoo

Ok I will give you the "buggy" one, maybe it is just my babysitter that calls it a buggy.

And, I lived in a three bedroom apartment in the town I still live in that I had to hand light the heater, any strong wind and the stupid thing would blow out. I hated that damn apartment. My heatig bill was sky high too. Yes, I may not have the correct name here for whatever the unit is called but I KNOW I was hand lighting that fucking unit all the time. LOL

Oh My bad on forgetting the wood heating!!! lol I didn't mean to offend!!! And dont you mean down cellar?

Im so sorry, I did not see this post until today, I am so glad that I was not the only one that had such a shock when they moved here. Not that I am happy you went through a shock but is so very different up here. I had moved up here from Germany, I was in the military, no less and was still a shock for me.

I can imagine the difference you went through.

Hi. I just now found your blogs, I saw you checked out my profile (thank you for that) and I ended up here. Pop, seems to be an upstate thing because not too far away from here no one knows what it is. My relatives in Texas, don't know how to play golf in the hills, and don't understand people here replace their cars because they are shot (rust) not just because they are tired of them and want a different one. HA! Happy blogging. Slowhand.

I'm kinda curious about the Texas Tits as well.

And I've been here in Rochester since '91. It's very weird and very annoying sometimes. But it's nice. And I totally agree...
"I'll have a coke... What kind? Pepsi..."

I never did get an answer about what are Texas Tits? Yes, I have "Tits", if you must call them that. Are they Texas size, is that what he means, I have NO clue? I have enough to comfortably fit in the palm of your hands. Does that answer the question to the liking of others? LOL

I have been in Rochester since 95. Sometimes I HATE it up here and sometimes I like it. I HATE it because I have no family except my kids. Most of the time I deal with it.

"I'll have a coke as well.....favorite kind....D.R. Pepper baby. a TRUE Texan likes Dr. Pepper. lol

I like you!!! You keep me laughing!!!

Kisses to you!!!!

Is there anyway to get updated when someone posts a response to your response? I've been kinda waiting to see if you responded and apparently I have to go back and check on the individual responses. That's gonna be weird.

My fiance is much like that. She feels pretty alone except for her kids. She's got friends but remember having more friends where she is from.

Ever been to the Dr Pepper bottling plant near Waco? There is also the only plant in america that still uses cane sugar in their soda and they make Dr Pepper. But those bottles are pretty expensive compared to others.

Oh, I've never heard the statement before. I'm assuming it's a discussion of size, but I've always prefered the word breasts instead of Tits. "Tits" seems vulgar.
