How I learnt to walk and talk again

Many years ago when i was supposedly aimless but in reality just pissed off with the lack of adventure available and the pressure of conforming to a way of life that made no sense to me i just decided to refuse to participate.

I kept up the basic requirements, good job, active social life and a large group of acquaintances and friends, played sport and was involved in life physically. Mentally and spiritually I was far, far away keeping myself pristine.

At the end of this period I was in a motor vehicle accident and woke up from a coma in a hospital with no idea how i got there or what had happened. I did what any rational person would do and pushed the call button so someone could come and fill me in on the details. The scorecard went as follows; Broken ulna, dislocated clavicle, bruised lungs, broken nose, fractured vertebrate, head injuries assorted cust and abrasions. I personally did not find this all to serious until i tried to move. I felt like i had been in a tumble drier set on high, even breathing hurt which as you know is a quite vital exercise.

The next two years were pretty much misery, I did not complain but every day started with pain and my motivational catch cry in that period was 'It can't get any worse than this.' so I might as well get out of bed. Being a pigheaded individual my refusal to take pain killers on prescription may be seen as stupid by some but after 14yrs I finally got rid of the pain. Of course then came another four years of still being a party animal out of habit until I realised that this was no longer relevant to my new resurgent energy levels.

I still stumble over my tongue speaking words when tired. Yet can talk non stop for at least an hour and a half when doing a stand-up comedy gig. I never belittle people who make an embarrassing faux pas or error in their life but rip shreds out of any heckler who thinks they can to me from the security of an audience. My sense of balance is still completely unpredictable but i never fall over accidently, i am still as graceful as a bowling bowl moving through a crowd and an expert at saying 'excuse me' and 'sorry let me help you up off the ground'.

How did I do it? I used my mind, I educated myself and made my own choices on rehabilitation. If I did not have so much fun i may have got better sooner, but 'It can't get any worse than this...' is effective, If pain does get worse the intitial pain is always consistent so any reduction from maximum pain to existing pain is an improvement.

I spent 14 yrs just as horny as I am now but with an inconsistent erectile dysfunction (don't you just love smart sounding words) sometimes i could get a hard on sometimes not. Pain does that, now the only pain i get is from my hardon trying to make my pants stretch to accomodate it. Not all pain is bad pain. Mind you I would love to meet the person who coined the phrase, "No pain, no gain.", so i can kick them in the crotch and say, "pleased to be able to help you."

Am I lucky? No, I was persistent and refused to accept disability as an excuse for not being myself. Am i happy? Fucking oath!

Is learning to walk and talk again important? Of course but there are lots of things that matter in my life and they are not the most important ones. I think the saying is; "you never value something until you lose it." I can take it a step further, "You dont know what you value until you get something back you had lost."

I hope you did not acquire you one eyed sight through barracking for Collingwood. Oh yeah I'd make a great Labrador seeing eye dog and I'd still hump your leg on public transport lol

hehehehe, actually no Tala my eyesight has always been bad,

at one point I was given the choice by my parents to wear either my hearing aids or my glasses at school in an effort to get me to wear either lol, I chose the hearing aids as at least without the glasses I could see where I was going, it slowly gets worse though, it becomes more and more noticeable now, according to the optomistrist my right eye is cactus, basically I rely on my one eye now.....
