SPECTACULAR SPORTS SATURDAY - South Carolina Gamecocks

Missouri to play South Carolina in Independence Bowl

For the second time in three years, Missouri will play in the Mainstay Independence Bowl, school and bowl officials announced Sunday.

The Tigers will face Steve Spurrier's South Carolina Gamecocks on Dec. 30 in Shreveport, La.

Missouri's last bowl appearance was in the 2003 Independence Bowl, where it lost to Arkansas 27-14.

"We had a great experience at the Independence Bowl a couple years ago, but obviously came up short against Arkansas," coach Gary Pinkel said. "To go down again and have another opportunity is something I'm sure our players are going to look forward to."

Senior quarterback Brad Smith, who was named first-team All-Big 12 as an "all-purpose" selection, is particularly excited. After leading the Tigers to Shreveport as a sophomore, Smith and Missouri struggled last year and fell short of a postseason bid with a 5-6 record.

"A lot of seniors have been there and want to go out with a win," Smith said.

Missouri (6-5) struggled again late this season, losing three of its last four games - including the season finale against Kansas State. Missouri is 9-13 all-time in bowl games, its last win coming in the 1998 Insight.com Bowl.

"The first time it was really an experience, and now its about the winning side of the bowl," senior safety Jason Simpson said. "We're more mature now. We know we can do it. We expect this now, and we're going to go out there and try to get a victory."

The Gamecocks (7-4) haven't been to a bowl since the 2001 season, but they have won the last three bowl games they played.

South Carolina had won five straight SEC games - including wins against Tennessee and Florida - before ending the regular season with a loss to Clemson. In 12 seasons at Florida, Spurrier took the Gators to 11 bowl games.

"All I can remember is Steve Spurrier and the Gators," Missouri cornerback Calvin Washington said. "He coached some great teams. It's going to be a privilege."

Smith is equally eager to face a team coached by Spurrier.

"I'm loving it already," Smith said. "He's one of the biggest coaches in the game."

It's the second bowl game in five seasons at Missouri for Pinkel, who led three Toledo teams to bowl games.

Missouri beat three bowl-bound teams this season, including Arkansas State, Iowa State and Nebraska. After losing to Kansas and Colorado, Missouri became bowl eligible with a win against Baylor on Nov. 12.

TTigerAtty's Comments - "Gary Pinkel is "on-the-bubble", at least in by book! Only two bowl games in his first five seasons at Missouri. If he loses to South Carolina in the Independence Bowl, then his bowl record at Missouri will be 0-2....not good enough! Also, he has never beaten Kansas State, a border state rival, during his five seasons at the Missouri helm and he has a losing record against Kansas, our major rival. His ill-conceived misuse of potential Heisman candidate, Brad Smith, two years ago still irks me and many Missouri alums! If Pinkel can beat a Steve Spurrier coached South Carolina team, then I will give him the benefit of the doubt and support renewal of his contract. If not, it's time to seriously evaluate whether or not he's the guy to take our program to the next level. Gary Barnett, fired at Colorado, is available. Barnett has Missouri roots and played his collegiate football as a Tiger. His parents still live in Mexico, MO. I'm sure we could get him. He's produced winning records at Northwestern and Colorado, despite losing his last three games at Colorado. Losing to Iowa State, Nebraska and Texas by a combined score of 130-22 would have to be examined closely and the underlying reasons would need to be understood. We should also explore the availability of other successful head coaches who would bring instant credibility to the Missouri football program. Meanwhile, let's wait and see if Pinkel can put together a defensive plan to stop Spurrier's high-powered offense in the Independence Bowl."

I have not been watching this team - will be now. Anyway, you've made a couple of posts where you discuss disappointment with Coach Pinkel. In your last post I think there was a statement from Pinkel that the team had not been practicing because of recruitment and other things going on. I love to watch sports, but don't follow as much as you or know all the ins and outs as you seem to. Is what Pinkel said normal - do teams have to have the coach there to practice? I thought there was somebody to back-up the coach and keep the team together - I could be off though. Anyway, just thinking if he doesn't have his team practicing as much as he should shame on him. Can't wait for 12/30 to see how everybody does!

Go Cocks!

Oops ... I forgot I said I would pull for Tigers this year even though I worked for USC for a little bit.

GO TIGERS!

Whispersoftly5 - We lost a football player, Aaron O'Neal, during an un-supervised but legal practice session this summer. He passed out on the practice field and although the University Medical Center is just right across the street from the football field, his teammates and graduate assistant coaches didn't respond promptly and get him medical attention. Unfortunately, he died. The investigation is still underway, I think. Now, the coaching staff is particularly sensitive to conducting any practice sessions without responsible coaching staff and medical staff available. They cannot afford a repeat of what happened this summer. And recruiting is also going on, so I imagine the coaching staff is stretched pretty thin. Pinkel, must win, I think, or we should be looking to see who else might be available. He's had 5 years and hasn't produced better than a 6-5 season. The North Division of the Big 12 is ripe for the taking. The South Division is very strong, witness #2 TEXAS going against #1 USC in the Rose Bowl on January 4th. Missouri, with natural in-state recruiting areas in St. Louis and Kansas City, should be able to dominate the North Division and that should be our expectation. We should also expect 7-4 to 10-1 seasons realistically!

Gosh darn it! My comments are not sticking! I left one in response to your response to my original comment and it's not here. LOL! Anyway, I remember hearing about that poor young man. That was very sad. Now I understand why they want the seasoned coach around for practice. Thanks!
