What is wrong

My nephew came home from school yesterday with a bite mark on his face. He is in the 5th grade. My sister asked him what happened and he said that a boy at school got mad at him and bit him. My sister called the school and they said nothing like this had ever happened and they didn't know how to handle it. Come to find out my nephew and this other kid were playing football and joking around when eat other would go to kick. The kid knocked the ball out of my nephews hand so my nephew pushed him. The kid pushed him back and all was well. A few minutes later my nephew threw the ball to a team mate and the kid got mad at him. He ran over and bit my nephew in the face. My nephew hit the kid and knocked him down....then they went back to playing. Silly boys. My nephew told his teacher about what had happened and since school was almost out she didn't do anything. My sister was MAD! Today the school got back to her. They suspended the kids for three days and my nephew got lunch detention. Now my nephew face is swollen and black and blue. We took pictures of his face just incase. I am still in shock over the fact that a 5th grader would bite another 5th grader over something so petty. Have we let our children down? My nephew is in big trouble with his father over the pushing issue and fighting. The school thinks they handled the situation fair. I think they didn't. I feel that my sister should have told them that she doesn't want the other child's education to be harmed and that maybe they could have him pick up garbage before school, on recess and after school. Maybe they should have him clean the desks after school, anything but let the child stay home. Is that really a punishment...let me think. Watch TV all day while mom and dad work....three days of vacation.

I know. I am a Police Officer and I see this kind of thing all the time. Its hard to deal with because you know what the system will do to these kids. If I deal with them officially, they get sent into the State/ county system. If the school deals with them they are just sent the message that situations like this will get them a few days of extra detention. What ever happened to the days of common sense?
I am lucky to work in a small enough town where I can go to the families and work out an amicable solution that usually amkes more sense. One of the benifits of being a small town cop is that you can have a dirrect effect on someone's life in a positive manner.
I'm sure that they are both good kids. It sounds like your nephew was just defending himself.
The other kid probably just comes from a family where violence is more common at home. I see it all the time.

P.S. You knew me before by my prior screen name here of gunrun45 . I had some quirks in my profile and had to change to this one. Haven't uploaded a new pic yet though.
