Mint Tea and Tulips

When I came in my office this morning, there was a surprise on my desk. Right in the middle, right in front of my chair, right where it says, “Look! This is for you!”, was a big vase of tulips. I had stopped on the way to my office at the kitchen to make some mint tea, one of my favorite pick me ups in the world, and I almost dropped it.

Of course it didn’t enter my mind that this was a logical improbability. I do not know anyone at this point in my life who sends flowers, for no reason. I don’t know anyone who knows that I love them. There isn’t anyone who I’m aware of who would send me flowers. Even the most remote of possibilities do not know where I work, and it would be very Cinderella-ish to think they would do that anyway.

However. I am nothing if not romantic through every last strand of my DNA, and these logical things do not pop into my mind. Or, if they tried, the romantic DNA formed a rope and choked it right out. So, I sat down, turned the vase slowly, admiring the colors, the fragrance, the soft bending of the stems. I touched a red tulip, sipped my mint tea and savored that moment, that mirage like shimmery lines on a desert highway.

My hand was reaching for the card, my fingers were on it…. “Oh MY GAAAWWWD!!! He DID send flowers, the dollbaby! Ooowwhh, JeeeZUZ, I’m sorry honey, the clerk brought these to you by mistake. They’re mine.”

Yeah…the secretary who wears nude hose the color of an African tribeswoman despite the fact that she has Scandinavian skin, hose with reinforced toes, open toed shoes, hot pink lipstick and a horrid New Jersey accent. In a stunned moment, as she whisked them from my desk, I saw the card “Judy”. We have a new file clerk who apparently got ‘Judy’ and ‘Jodi’ confused.

Right. Who’s up for lunch cocktails? I need a filthy dirty martini.

Princess, I merely need your work address to shower you with the sweetly fragrant roses you deserve.
I will be back in tampa next week. Shall we dance?

Something similar happened once at my previous place of employment... one my female coworkers accepted a flower delivery on behalf of a woman who, uh, was fired the previous week.

Let me drive. I like the view
