women's online safety ideas

I get wild eyed ideas when I can't sleep at night. Well last night I was contemplating the notion to start some kind of movement to influence dating sites to help out more with online safety for women. I have read lots of blogs by many of you about how you have been harassed and how AdultFriendFinder doesn't have a lot of things in place to protect you after reporting the abuse.

I was thinking of starting up a site that I could hand over to a woman who knows more about it. My main idea involves adding something to our photos to show support for your needs as well as something else to show whether you've been a victim of online abuse so that we get a grasp on how frequent it really is. I was thinking along the lines of some kind of ribbon in a little little square to add to photos, but I don't know if that would pass through photo guidelines for most personals sites. It wouldn't be an advertisement, just a symbol. I guarantee many other women on other personals sites all go through the same kinds of abuse. It would be a good way to draw attention to the problem and show admins we'd like some other things done.

Do you think it's a worthwhile project or not? A lot more can be done on behalf of the people running the sites to protect you. Speaking out about it in your blogs has reached plenty of people, I'm sure.

I don't have much time for it, but I thought I'd at least run the idea by everyone.

Any Idea to protect anyone from online dangers and abuse is a worth while cause. Check out these two posts by [blog soykofla] I believe he also has a group on here about this subject. There are not enough people on here willing to protect each other. Notice I wasn't gender specific, simply because harrasment and abuse works both ways, but it is generly focused on women.

Sounds like a good idea, but I find that some people just delight in harassing people who acknowledge they've been "picked on".

I have an abhorrance for bullies, online or not, and they exist on this site (both male and female, btw)... my current "bully" is a female, who should know better, but gets her thrills from belittling me... fast way to lose friends, as far as I am concerned. I just live in the belief that what goes around comes around, and I look forward to having the last laugh, as far as she is concerned!!!

It's a good idea, although I would also extend the invite to males. Although I'm sure the number is less, I do know of males that get harassed on this site by males and females alike.

I also agree with Helga. While assuredness is a learned trait, the best way to stand up to a bully is to show them you won't allow yourself to be bullied. It's a power and control game, and once a bully sees he or she can't control you, he or she ends up moving on to an unfortunate soul that will allow a bully to manipulate them.

Again, another example of how the online world mirrors real life. Cruel people are everywhere.

Scope61--thanks for posting that. The more info to arm oneself with, the better.

Slim...you are a good guy..nice to know they exist on this site, although the male bloggers seem cool compared to the average mass-mailing males of AFFFF.

I tagged ya....check my blog post [post 283269] for details.

Cheers....meer

I don't play tag. No time for it.

Just to let you all know, the subject line for this blog was changed by someone at some point from "women's online safety" to simply "women."

I'm not happy about this because although this is their site and they have rules, they stepped outside their boundaries this time and in doing so, have given me new not so nice thoughts.
