How to get some sleep?

I've had problems sleeping for a few years now and have tried all sorts of things, including prescription medication, to help me to sleep better.

Unfortunately, none of them seem to work that well!!!!

What do you do to help yourself get to sleep?

Any tips or advice for me?

I would suggest inviting me over around 21:30 every night and I'll put you to sleep. I'm that boring.

There is such a thing called as "Sleep Hygiene".
Simply put it is developing bedtime rituals: You go to bed the same time every night; you may try few relaxing activities prior going to bed such as taking bubble bath, reading, listening to relaxing music, whatever works for you - these rituals done over and over conditions your body to going to bed at certain times and sleeping at night. If still does not help, see "sleep study" specialist, ask your family doctor to refer you to one.

gcao1 beat me to it. i was going to suggest the very same thing. You could also try the herbal remedies. Lavender is said to aid sleep also try St John's Wart as an aid to relaxation.

Also, as i mentioned to you previously in one of our chats, masturbation does help me relax and get me off to dream land

Have you tried Reiki? I took the first degree in Reiki it cost me £75 for the course and it ,means I can practice on myself as well as others - it's a way of balancing your energies - it sounds hippy rubbish but is brilliant - if you don't want to learn to do it yourself then you can go to a practitioner - if you were a bloke I'd offer to do it for you !!!Drop me a line if you want more info.

sounds to me like you've got alot going on in your mind SSL.. and you need to relax more..I have the same trouble and its dificult when you have so many thoughts running through your head isnt it? but ew all need to switch off now and again. some light excercise, but no in the gym as that gets you pumped up, like going for a walk out in the country, that always helps clear my head.. and if you take your phone dont use it unless you have to. then a nice long soak in the bath with some essential oils.. try having a bath by candle light only too.. thats very relaxing then listening to some relaxing music, like classical stuff and leave the telly off, the read a book in bed.. works for me anyway. Reiki, as Kaffryn says, really does work too.. I had it done on a "frozen shoulder" that had been troubling me for years.. two sessions and its never been better. lol xx

qcao1- actually masturbation always helps me sleep- I think its the tensing up of all those muscles followed by the release at orgasm.

A few years back I was in the same boat SSL. I tried the sleep hygiene methods the doctor gave me (as gcao1 said) and it helped a bit. Not tried Reiki but I've heard very good things about it, just never got around to it. Finding Reiki specialists doesn't seem to be the easiest thing either (kaffryn can you recommend any?).

The thing that worked for me sounds weird but fixed it for me. Its a sort of meditation I got from Tai Chi - you concentrate entirely on a clear ball inside your abdomen. With every breath in, the ball fills with energy / light / whatever you want, and empties with every breath out. By breathing deeply and focusing, your body relaxes and your mind calms. Sounds weird I know!

**essay over**

The visualisation meditation works very well for me actually- you can also get guided meditation tapes if you have trouble with visualisation.
