Racing through it all

The Indianapolis 500 is this weekend. I've never much cared about it, but I'm told I am supposed to if I am an American. That doesn't mean, though, that I can't make a metaphor out of it.

I was thinking about how I've always approached relationships. (Seriously, Seriously?)(Great. The Voice has decided to join us.) I have rushed through my life pell-mell as if my ass was on fire. I do not go slowly. I bristle at the fucking pace car. I don't care how hot it is, I was not made to fucking PACE. I was made to run. When that fucking pace car comes out, I'm the guys weaving back and forth and back and forth getting loose and antsy. Lemme at 'em, lemme go. But if you change positions while in a pace mode, guess what? A serious violation. Stay where you are until you are allowed to race.

When you are allowed to race, let it go, but don't lose control. I've crashed into the wall a few times, and taken a few other vehicles with me. And one thing I've learned: people do really love the spectacle of a crash on the track. (Gee, ya THINK?) I've had two fatalities that I am not proud of, though the latest won't be pronounced officially dead until June 14.

Occasionally I have to take a pit stop to refuel and keep going. I need gas, tires, and strength infused from time to time. It sucks to run out of gas.

I've never been black-flagged. But I've been red-flagged for a while.

And the caution flags -- ALWAYS after a wreck on the track -- are the worst. Stay where you are, take a pit, get ready to go again. I hate them. That pace car comes back out.

And then there's all that weaving in and out of traffic when you restart. Sometimes you catch lightning in a bottle that slingshots you after you've drafted for a while. That's a wonderful feeling. And sometimes you get boxed in, unable to progress, just stuck until something opens up. I hate that, too.

But seriously, Seriously, aren't you missing the bigger point? You keep going in circles. You only make the same left turns. You keep coming back to the same point hundreds of times. You are getting nowhere. Why are you on the track at all?

(I hate that fucking Voice sometimes.)

Those are, in fact, the right points. And here is my answer:

I was born on the track. I am what I am. It is my nature to run from the pack, to race around until the checkered flag. I would prefer to be on a road race. I would prefer to be cross-country. But I am not. I am on the track, and the only way to get off is to finish.

That's a cop out. You can quit the race. If you know you're going in circles, you can quit the race.

Fuck you, Voice. That's easy for you to say. I have been crafted for 37 years to be on this track. It is what I know, it is my life. I am not made for street riding. I am what I am. Yes, it does go around in circles. But that does not mean that nothing happens. It does not mean that nothing redeeming happens along the way. I get better. Smarter. Faster even. I learn to avoid accidents. I learn to pick my spots. I was BORN on the track. I am here until I am done.

There are people who think that going in circles is stupid. I am not one of them. It isn't the destination, it's the journey, right Voice? Isn't that what all those people say? Well my journey may take me in circles but it changes every single time around the track.

And I will finish. I will. My ride is strong, fast, and adorned with sponsorships of humor, music, logic and words. My pit crew, my ka-tet is solid and sound. And there have been some fascinating moments in the race so far.

That checkered flag will come, and when it does, I will be in the lead. Because that -- that right there -- that is my nature, too.

When I'm done, I'll do a few donuts on the infield and retire. I'll skid to a stop, climb on top, and shout "WHAT A RIDE!"

Now, if you don't mind, I need to go. The green flag is about to drop again. See you around...and around...and around...

OK, so let's look at what's going on around these blogs. Valley's advising friends against red cars, you're racing in the Indy 500 and I'm spinning a bunch of freakin' plates.

I'm afraid we're each gonna start speaking in one continual simile before too long.

Tomorrow at 10AM someone will say to one of us: "What time is it?"

And we'll reply: "It's like fat man and little boy, only reversed."

Yeah, I'm still [blog 1hotwahine]

This has nothing to do with the post because I don't feel like thinking today. I just wanted to say Stickboy is back! I always loved Stickboy.

Have tongue, will use it. Repeatedly.

Seriously_Real replies on 5/26/2006 3:10 pm:
The more things change, the more things stay the same. Stickboy is who I am, and who I was when I grew up. I missed him. He did me good.

And sometimes you just gotta do something different.

Reluctantly crouched at the starting line,
Engines pumping and thumping in time.
The green light flashes, the flags goes up,
Churning and burning, they yern for the cup.

They deftly manouver and muscle for rank,
Fuel burning fast on an empty tank,
Wreckless and wild they pour thru the turns,
Their prowless is podent and secretly stern.

As they speed thru the finish the flags go down.
The fans get up, and get out of town.
The arena is empty except for one man,
Still driving and striving as fast as he can

........

He's going the distance.
He's going for speed.
He's going the distance...

Lady Bambi here!

You know something, I have approached some of my relationships at a
fast pace and I have learned the hard way to take it nice and slow.

When you take it slow you really get to know the other person and vise versa.

I met Mr.Bambi about 10 months now and we kinda took it slow but as you can tell we are the best of friends because that's how we started out, and of course the best of LOVERS.

Have a nice Memorial weekend.

Lady Bambi

Seriously_Real replies on 5/27/2006 11:07 am:
Thank you, Bambi. I take it much slower now, actually. That's the practical result of a yellow flag and a pace car, and the recent accident has got me moving much more slowly. After a much needed pit, of course.

You and I agree that we know that same track. Stay with me, I have a point and I am older than you. Perhaps, just maybe, being on the track isn't the fuckin problem! Going fast, again, not a problem. My thoughts (newly learned) are this; ITS A LONG FUCKIN ASS RACE! Every once in awhile, ease up on the gas pedal, just a bit. Where are all the other cars and how are they positioned around you? Need to change the tires? Need to pit-stop and get some gas and check the engine? What about the chick in the halter top holding up the placard, check her out! And all those people in the stands, there to watch and cheer you on. Gotta take a second during the race to appreciated that! It's only a moment. You can make the time up. You know, I know, we all know you can do stuff and you own and belong on the track. It's just that you gotta slow down once in awhile or someone's gonna wreck and the little pace car is coming out.

Seriously_Real replies on 5/27/2006 11:10 am:
And that, my friend, is exactly my point. As I get older (not as old as you, though), I learn my way around the track, see things better and differently. Even learn from the wrecks and the trouble spots and when to pit. Even check out the hotness in the halter top (rowr!). When I get my shot, though, I'm gone. It is not in my nature to go slow all the time. Right now it is needed.

Hey! Look at her! Wow....what a nice halter top!

Man, do I know this one, though I think I'm more shy than you. I recently wrote a woman here who's commented in my blog, and me in hers. I know humans prefer to proceed slowly, a short note of interest and maybe a couple photos are a strategic first step.

Noooooooooo, not me, I send her my whole life story, perhaps sounding obsessed with her though insist I'm not, and include 2 collages of 11 photos, including one from 50 years ago, as we happen to have been born 5 days apart in the same city, maybe same hospital, perhaps infant nursery mates.

I have to say I agree with Gerson's comment.

Yes, it does go around in circles. But that does not mean that nothing happens. It does not mean that nothing redeeming happens along the way. I get better. Smarter. Faster even. I learn to avoid accidents. I learn to pick my spots. I was BORN on the track. I am here until I am done.

That part above meant the most to me. We might go in circles, but yes, things happen on the way, experiences that we learn from.

And as a side note, your comment to Caress was hilarious, lol!! Spoken like a lawyer for some reason .

I can't think of anything "cutesy" to say here. Instead I will compliment your ability to write what I think much better than I could ever write it.

I too race all out, straight ahead, sometimes too fast to make the turn. I've crashed, I've been burned. In fact so many times that I now have lots of protective gear.

I've pulled my car off the track. My car is being reworked. My pit crew here is helping me too. Thanks for being on my team. Mac

Yeah... Fuck you, Voice!

It's the crashes that make the race interesting... I like it when the car is COMPLETELY totalled... wheels rolling away in different directions, hood bent off and dangling, bumper torn off... everyone gasps...

And then the driver jumps out and waves.

XOXO
