The "Wilt C." Of The Insect Kingdom

Up late last night...had to finish watching Million Dollar Baby. Anyway, I passed by the Discovery Channel and started watching a story on ants. I had an interesting episode with a mound of fire ants back when I lived in Mobile, and the end result was me falling in a pool; therefore my interest.

Anyhow, it seems that there is this Sausage Fly, correctly named as it's abdomen looks a bit like a sausage. About as large as an average man's thumb with large wings and resides in the Kiswahili region in Africa. It's counterpart is an ant known as "siafu," a blind ant that hang in a group 20 million strong and can be anywhere from 1mm to 15mm in length, and are mainly females. The siafu are both a benefit and a hazard in this region as they wipe out significant pests. The down side...they are rumored to have taken down several locals and possibly some visitors to the area.

The amazing part though is how the colony reproduces. The Sausage Fly at some point in time comes across the traveling siafu...the siafu detect him, jump him and strip him of his wings. They then carry him back to the mound which could be many miles away. Why do they do this...? He has the sperm needed to reproduce the entire colony of 20 million.

A little off the beaten path I know...hadn't blogged in some time and the correlation between reproduction, sex, and society got me thinking.

Nature is really amazing. Can you imagine being in a colony of 20 million that is mostly female? Talk about benefit and hazard. LOL.

I still think it's interesting that I'm the only guy who visits your blog while my blog gets 90% males. I think I'm putting off the wrong vibe....

Keep on blogging.

Always interesting...the women visit but don't always comment with the exception of a few. I don't thing your putting out the wrong vibe...you do have the market on "friends" though!

HEY! I saw the same thing! Nature is an amazing thing! It always, always finds a way, if there is a way, to survive.
