Confusion abounds in Jeep-land today...HELP!!

Hi'ya, all!
So the jeep-driver is more than a little confused and bemused this a.m. I had a very strange experience last night and wanted some thoughts from the wise bloggers to help.....
Went out to a local bar last night, just a little place with cold beer and good music on the box. So I'm sittin' there at the bar havin' a cold one with my "new best friend", lol, and this girl comes up next to me to get a drink from the bartender. We smile at each other and say hi but when I asked her how her night is going, she says that this jerk at the table next to her keeps making "stupid remarks" about doing "stuff" to her. Well, being a gentleman, I asked her if she needed help. She said, "No thanks, I'm a big girl" and took her drink and walked away.
So about 15 minutes later, I heard some raised voices over my shoulder and turned to see this "jerk" standing next to her with his hand on her shoulder and she was yelling something to the effect of "get the fuck away from me, you asshole" (of course, that's a loose translation). The other girl at her table was looking like a deer in the headlights and the "jerk" really did look like a jerk, so I got up and went over toward them.
As I approached the table, I said "excuse me miss, are you okay?" Well, "Jerk-Boy" tells me to fuck off or he will kick my ass. I wasn't looking for a fight, but I didn't think he was behaving appropriately and advised him of such. Well, apparently he decided that he WAS looking for a fight and started swinging.
Now, I've studied some martial arts in my life and it's easy enough anyway to dodge a drunk's sucker-punch, so after he had swung and missed several times, almost tripping himself on a chair, I put my hands up and told him he was being ridiculous and that he should just find somewhere else to be. Well, he pretty much stopped swinging and stood there for about a half a second.....then, suddenly, as if from out of nowhere (cuz he was "nowhere" to be seen for the last half hour), the illustrious bouncer grabbed the guy from behind and proceeded to uncerimoniously throw "El Jerko" from the establishment.
So I proceeded to walk back to the ladies and asked if they were okay. Here is the confusion causer.....she gives me a look that could have burned holes through me and says "Why didn't you just hit him? He deserved it!" Then her and her friend get up and immediately head out of the bar, stopping to give the bouncer a kiss on the cheek!
Now, I didn't do what I did in hopes of getting a kiss from the lady, or anything like that. I was in there for a drink, not to score a drunken one-nighter! But I thought I did what I thought was right, and not only did I not even get a thank you, but ridicule and disdain instead. I don't believe in using violence to overcome violence, it only perpetuates the cycle.
So, illustrious wise what I did wrong? Should I have just kept my meddling nose out of it and let her deal with it herself? Or was she just crazy and I should not let this bother me (I don't know why it does, but for some reason it does, lol).

First of all, she is a bitch not to thank you for trying to get the asshole away from her. Chicks like that attract the type of jerks that would not leave her alone. I use the word chick because female, lady, woman, girl is too good for her.

Had you saved me from a jerk like him. I would have bought you a couple rounds, gave you a kiss and a huge hug.

You are a knight in shining armour if you ask me.

Don't let it bother you, she is just an ungrateful drama queen.

lol, diva, I don't know how shiny my armor is, but I try to keep it in good condition, anyway. Thank you both, ladies, for your sweet sentiment. I'm felling better already.
