The Global Village

A rather odd occurrance has blighted my visits to this site today. For the whole day every time I log into AdultFriendFinder or try to use any of its facilities, I have been taken to French language pages. No matter what I did to my settings and home pc, every AdultFriendFinder page was the French version.I guess it must have been one of those all too often occurring AdultFriendFinder glitches especially after discovering other people had had similar experiences in Spanish.

I wasn't too inconvenienced personally as I know my way around the site and also had quite a good understanding of the language. However it occurred to me that the British in general have a rather poor understanding of foreign languages. Most of us give up after school and soon forget what we were taught even there. And has anyone NOT heard the time honoured stand up comedians routines about English people abroad struggling to be understood and refusing to speak other languages - instead resorting to shouting , repetition and a form of pidgin which often just consists of putting the likes of "0" on the end of words.

I took 2 languages at school when it came to choosing my options - French and German. In fact I had to get special permission to do so as my school had a policy when it came to choosing options - one science, one language being compulsory. Sadly it's not something that I have kept up but I have always had that feeling that I would like to know languages better.I certainly would always try to speak the language when abroad where possible - I feel it only polite to observe language and customs when a guest in someone else's country.Admittedly I am not as much of a foreign traveller as I would wish in recent years but this is something I hope to rectify in time.

Currently my language skills are as follows - Basic French at a level higher than school and phrasebook improved by the large amount of French films I watch, German probably of an intermediate level as I lived in Berlin for 6 years as a child (I certainly can make myself understood and function with no difficulties in basic and normal non business situations), the odd word or two of Japanese gained here and there, a large quantity of Dutch from friends and also when I lived there for a while and Beginners Spanish.

I am currently teaching myself Spanish with various aids and guides, I am a great lover of Spanish arts - film (Almodovar in particular), poetry of Neruda, theatre of Lorca and hope one day to visit Cuba.I am loving the excitement of being able to express myself in another language and rising to the challenge I have set myself to speak Spanish before I visit Cuba. It's a fun way to pass the time.

So think about it - try not to be the white sock with sandal wearing, fish and chip eating, union jack flying Brit abroad and try to embrace the language, cuisine and culture of other nations when you step off these shores.

My father spoke 4 languages, and my mother spoke 7...
Both were 1st generation Americans and so kept up with middle/southern European traditions of being able to converse with neighboring countries...
When my siblings and I were little, my father made a ruling to the effect that "This is America, we need to just speak English"... So from then on, we kids just spoke English, and "lost" our other language skills (although our parents kept theirs).
Too bad... I still wish I could have kept up with all the other languages.
People newly arriving in the States should try to assimilate into American culture and learn English, but be careful not to lose their heritage and native language as they do. As the world keeps shrinking, multi-lingual people are going to have an advantage and a better chance of success in the future.

This can be a difficult challenge for my fellow Americans considering the fact that most of us don't even speak English (that is the American version of English)very well! (I would place the laughing smiley face here, but it isn't so much funny as sad)

Welcome to my blog. Feel free to stop by anytime.

You make some very good points there. Interesting to see the US isn't so different from the UK in this regard.

Reverbe, it is working now at last, and I have not done anything to the cookies and history. My guess is that the system has a glitch cos another site from the same group of sites, had the same problem at the same time. I think everything is fixed now. Touch wood.

Thanks for the welcome.

I speak quite a bit of Spanish due to my flamenco dancing past. I have a little understanding of german, french and italian though i understand more if I see it written rather than trying to pick up on dialects.

I really should go to Spain for a week or so and do nothing but speak Spanish, it's been so long sometimes the simplest words escape me. I used to go in the Spanish chat rooms but the chat in there doesn't help much, it's the same limited language you get in the UK room.

Bye everyone, it was a blast

Tracy

How interesting.I never knew of your flamenco dancing past.

You make a good point there about the limited language of the chat rooms. It never ceases to amaze me that people there can't seem to type or spell the most basic of correct English. The rises of text and ghetto speak and the inability to spell even the word "girls" without making it seem like you are seeking a kitchen appliance makes one really despair. And guys, if you can't spell the word discreet (and apparently most can't) , what chance do we have of discovering you understand the concept?

I've noticed quite a few discrete ways of spelling discreet...
