I found out the answer to one of those bizarro questions!

I'm taking Adolescent Psychology and I learned something extra interesting today.(This class is actually interesting everyday if it can keep me up at 8 am after 6 hours of sleep.)

You know why people always ask about why it is most people turn down the radio when they get lost?

I have the answer!

According to Pschology, this is when the process of automazation (doing something automatically, say driving) is interrupted.

For Example:
Let's say you are driving home from work and you are taking the same route home you always take. Perhaps this is the fastest way, perhaps it is the only way. After a period of time, your brain goes to "automatic pilot" when driving this route. This allows you to talk on the phone, fiddle with CDs, put on make-up, whatever. Then let's say that there is a slow down in traffic that does not normally occur in your everyday commute. Your brain sends a signal thru those lightining fast neural pathways that turns the automatization part of your body off. Your brain is trying to to process why you are having a problem commuting home. That moment may be the moment when you say, "Let me call you back," turn down the radio, or put away your mascara. Your brain needs all of its attention abilites to process why you cannot drive automatically back to your house. So when you get lost, that same scenario occurs. You turn off or turn down the radio because your brain is trying to focus its attention on the reason that you cannot proceed at your normal pace.

I love learning new little odd things like this, and thought I would impart my wisdom into your day. See you really do learn something everyday! Especially when you thought an old dog couldn't learn new tricks, HA! Proved you wrong again!

Toodles!

Interesting! Perhaps you could tell me if this is similar: A guy I know (in his 40's) had a car accident with "some" head injuries. He no longer is able to drive a car, because his brain "over-loads" and shuts down like a computer rebooting. He will be driving along and boing - he's unconscious (not sleeping, he's unconscious!).

I've heard people say that this is similar to the very first time you sky dive. When you jump (or in my case get PUSHED - I never leave a perfectly functioning airplane) your brain can't fathom the sudden rush of what's happening and "what the hell did you just do?" So you lose your memory of that brief second.

Doctors say sensory over-load does things to the brain. Kevin's is extremely sensitive.

Does this correlate with what you're studying now?

Must be less than two weeks to go, isn't it?

Mmm... Gotta love Adolescent Psych! My only question is why are you in school still? Doesn't your school let you out for a summer break? At least we get two months to breath (and not study for boards like I should be doing...)
I'm gonna have to just read all your blogs to see if I can't pick up a few new tricks myself.

Interesting! There is a law over here (UK) "Driving without due care and attention" or something similar...means it's illegal to drive whilst doing anything else that may distract you, such as talking on the phone (unless with hands free kit).

I guess part of the thinking is that the time it takes to switch between auto pilot and manual is crucial in an emergency and therfore any distractions are a bad thing. I remember a little while ago the police even pulled a lady for drinking from a bottle of water...mental!

Personally I think if they want to prevent accidents they should ban good looking women from walking next to busy roads lol.

-I think you would have a lot of guys ready to beat down your door cause they don't have anyone to honk at!

-Exactly 13 days if all goes to plan. That's pretty doubtful though. Most first-born babies are late.

Doesn't your school let you out for a summer break?
-Oh no it does, I'm just the nerdy overachiever who takes summer classes. Plus since I've been a surrogate Mom it's not like I can really have a social life or a job so my options on what to do with my time have been pretty limited. Even with class, there are only so many books you can read, movies you can watch, walks you can take the dog on, etc.

-I dunno, bad reflexes? I'm guilty of my fair share of accidents at 23, 4 pretty big ones actually. All my fault according to the cops. Now I try to drive like a blue-haired lady, it takes forever to get anywhere, but I haven't had a ticket since last summer (and that was a parking ticket)! I admit, my driving skills were and sometimes still (parallel parking anyone?) not the greatest. I swear I'm doing lots better since I got my liscence back last May! (Goes to show how bad of a driver I really did used to be!)

Sorry... I'm new to your blog... I guess I should read more posts before I start asking retarded questions! I am just feeling relieved myself since I am in my 2 month summer break between 1st and 2nd year and feel really bad for those in class... Because any break is a good break!

I think it's really cool that you are acting as a surrogate... Best of luck getting through the last few weeks! I have a good friend who is due on the 15th and is not enjoying life right now!!! (She has pitting edema in her lower extremities which is also giving here some neuropathy...) So I hope you're not hurting like she is!

Anyway, thanks for the wisdom and I hope that first beer postpartum comes quickly!
