Sick Dog

Earlier today I was thinking about this blog, and how I hadn't had much to say lately. Be careful what you wish for.

About half an hour ago, we let our dogs inside. They have a routine when they come in at night. The older, flat-coat retriever/chow mix demands some attention from me, then scours the kitchen floor for any cat food we "forgot" to clean up. The yellow lab/golden retriever mix races up the stairs, tears through the house checking for cats, then comes back to get any cat food the other dog missed. It's a time of high-energy, raucous joy for the dogs.

Tonight the lab/retriever crept up the stairs, walked slowly into the living room, and sat down next to the couch. When I called him to me, he walked back to me with his head down, grunting or wheezing between steps. I immediately got my wife, who has worked in vet offices and now works as a pet sitter and groomer (mostly groomer). She examined him, checking his abdomen, and said that his stomach felt hard. We called me sister, the veterinarian, and she volunteered to give him a look at her house (she lives a few miles away).

So here I am at home, worrying about the previously-indestructible lab/retriever and fixing a dinner that I no longer want to eat just because that's what I was doing when I realized he was sick. I'm typing this to give myself something to do in between checking on the food.

I'll try to update later when I know more about my poor dog.

Labs are pretty resilient dogs. And, being dogs, they will eat ANYTHING. Hopefully it's just a stomach ache. You might check your yard for anything he may have gotten hold of. I hope he's feeling better soon.

Have tongue, will use it. Repeatedly.

Thanks hotdarter and DaphneR. Too bad y'all live so far away from this transplanted Florida boy.
