A piece of History found

On Wensday I got a phone call from a friend who has a antuiqe shop in town - someone had brought in & sold a old hand forged Mattoc type tool head.
The pic I took may not show up to the left but I hope it does. What is so special about a 15lb peice of iron? well it was found recently near a Station known as Queen, Nevada. this peice of iron
had a story to tell me.
Hi, I'm Mat -short for Mattoc, I was born in the fire at the Trenton tool co. I was Shipped out West & when I got to where I was going someone took & Stamped - " C & C R R " on the side of my face, I was then given to a Burly man who took me
& started useing me to break up the ground. they were building a Railroad & I was a part of it.I went where my new owner went,I broke up rocks, tamped ballast along with maybe 250 of my brothers & sisters, one day my oak handle broke
& I lost my head. it disapeared in the sand & sage brush & I was never found so I went to sleep in the warm sand that coverd me. Then one day someone kicked me in the neck & freed me from my sand blanket. I was washed off & taken Many miles away & sold to a man, another man came in & took pictures of me He was very excited & happy to see me, He looked me over & found my birth mark from Trenton, Then he flipped me over & saw the
other mark stamped on the other side of my face The C & C R R mark was still there . The man could tell from the mark & my condition that I was born in the 1880's & The C & C R R mark was stamped into my face between May of 1880 & 1892.
Oh if only I could realy speak to you the stories I could tell .Mat.

Now in the 30 years that I have researched this line I've seen only 2 switch locks & keys, 1 conductors ticket punch,1 lantern & 1 key . & I bought the lone key about a year ago. Mat's future is yet to be determined But I hope it will find its way to a good home at our Museum.

Wow Jim no wonder your feeling giddy, what a find. I'll bet you find a spike hammer and a shovel next, that want to be found so they can be reunited with Matt Mattoc. Ah what a useful tool a mattoc is, a pickhead on one side and a hoe head on the other, just spin the tool in your hands to suit the task and keep digging. Great for all sorts of digging tasks.

I liked this! What an interesting find! It's always interesting to find a part of history and wonder what stories there are to tell....but, mostly, that someday, somewhere we always find a home.

Hi Mustang,Mag,Fly,Glad you found it as interesting as I did,I'm still looking for treasures like this but so far only documents that turn up for sale from time to time,Mainly you will find spikes, a few bolts, a date nail put in the tie the year it was installed,Maybe a old bottle still intact.
