Controversy in context

This painting is badly discoloured, but it's a natural and innocently erotic image of a little girl. These days, to paint it would have resulted in Vincent getting arrested as a paedophile. It's all a matter of context.

The pose is natural, not salacious, and she's relaxed (even if perhaps a little pouty at having to sit still and pose). Natural enough at that age. It's a shame that exposure to weirdos has lost us that cultural innocence. I've no doubt that paedophiles existed in 1886 when it was painted, but they weren't known in mainstream public awareness as they are these days.

To me, it's erotic but not arousing. It does nothing for me in that regard. What it does do is bravely celebrate her youth and unfettered prettiness in an age of extreme social constraints in dress and custom. And for that, I enjoy looking at it.
