Fact or Fiction?

Did you ever notice that sometimes the "who" in a photo isn't necessarily all that important to the sucess of the photo? Isn't it sometimes the type of photo? Or is the "who" inescapable when it comes to tripping your trigger photographically?

After some time on a.f.f. and lots of time in photography I frankly think that it's the photo over the subject to a large degree. Haven't you ever been sucked into someone's profile by their main pic only to see their other pix and realize this is NOT what you thought you were getting?

There are two that come to mind right away. One is that crotch shot where all you see is the area immediate to the genetalia (whichever sex, it doesn't matter) There are a lot of body types that look exactly the same with this type of shot.

The second is the "next to the window" shot. Everything is black or really dark except for choice highlighted areas of the body. Also, because it is a high contrast shot with extremely directional lighting, things seem... ah.. more pronounced than they necessarily are.

In either of these cases, motive could have been entirely innocent. They just think that this is their "best shot."

By accident or design, I know a lot of people complain that when they meet someone they are not what they represented themselves to be here at a.f.f. Sometimes it's blatantly obvious that they were being devious. Other times I wonder...

This goes the other way too! I've seen beautiful people in real life that are simply NOT photogenic. It just doesn't happen for them.

What do you think? Subject or technique? Who or How? Brad Pitt or Herb Ritts? Angelina Jolie or Helmut Newton? The Sierra Nevada or Ansel Adams? You tell me.
