What is "retro"?

Yesterday my son was looking at a pair of earplugs I use for swimming. "Cool earplugs, Dad. Very retro."

Retro? "Yeah, very retro. Very Y2K."

My son is ten. Y2K was half his lifetime ago. I suppose if something was half your lifetime ago, it could qualify as retro. However, that would make 1981 my "retro" year. And I'm not ready for that.

Later that day, I was at Wal-Mart and saw a new line of Rubbermaid "Retro" containers. They were brown and aqua and some kind of cat-barf green. They had what looked like a cartoon of Audrey Hepburn on them. I guess the drawing and the "What-was-I-thinking?" colors of kitchen appliances circa 1974 were the things that made them retro. I'm not sure.

What is "retro" to you? What does that mean?

I am retro, it means I am older than dirt..lol

Seriously, retro things in my mind include:

Aluminum Christmas trees that looks like someone had puked Reynolds wrap all over the place.

Shag carpeting, nuff said.

Beaded curtains

Fishnet hose

Fringed purses that hang down to your knees

Blue eyeshadow

Ooh, good ones, Berri!

My mom (who's not retro, just old ), reminded me of one: purses made out of old lunchboxes. That's kind of a double whammy: the lunchboxes were already retro before they were made into purses!

Anything the color of avacados. Only avacodos look good in that shade of green. And I'm not convinced all of them can pull it off.

LMAO at your description of aluminum Christmas trees! I'll remember that for the rest of my life! It's perfect!

Blue eye shadow, huh? I dunno ... I'm looking at someone wearing it as I write this. In fact, I still see that a lot. This must be ... The Land Where Blue Eye Shadow Still Lives! (Coming soon to a theatre near you!)

Ilove aluminum christmas trees!
Retro is everything you had as a kid.
If it belonged to you r Grandma, it's antique.

Ahh retro. My apartment is retro (wait, no, my apt is just falling apart). If they really wanted to make things feel retro they would also make them smell like either moth balls or an old dishrag. That would give it that real "found it in grandma's attic" feel.

Retro ... bell bottom low cut jeans, platform shoes, long straight hair cut into layers, tie-dyed shirts ... all of which I wear along with my blue eye shadow. No fringe though ...

Am radio, record albums, 1957 cars (would love to have one right now!) bicycles without gears, hot pants, go-go boots, afros, horned rimmed glasses.

Beck.

I love retro ...

I think I'm starting to see a pattern ...

If I remember it from my childhood, it's retro.
If my grandparents remember it from their childhood, it's antique.
If my parents remember it from their childhood, it's just old.

Our poor parents.

jayR, my grandparents had an aluminum Christmas tree, the first artificial tree I ever saw. It created a mini-scandal in our family. I still like Berri's description, but that doesn't mean I didn't love that tree. In fact, I'm very nostalgic for it; the coolest presents were always under that tree!

Masseur, I think if it's falling apart, it's trendy, not retro. I'm thinking of the distressed wood floors in my house. Every time I think about refinishing them, another J. Crew catalog comes, with pictures of models standing on floors that look like mine. If my floors are trendy enough to put in a J. Crew catalog, I'm not touching them!

beaujelais, you're just a little too good at this.

Make that 1957 car a Chevy Bel Air convertible, and I feel a road trip coming on!
