Computer keyboards should be stiff. Or at least not limp.

duststormdiva mentioned on her blog the other day what a pain it was getting water on her keyboard. That led into a discussion of other things you shouldn't get on your keyboard.

Have you seen flexible keyboards? They're made of silicone. You can fold or roll one up and carry it around with you. If you get something on it, you can immerse the entire thing in water. The military uses them for situations where sand, dirt, water, and other stuff could ruin a regular keyboard. They don't cost much more than a regular keyboard. I'm just enough of a technophile that I think it's a great idea.

But I don't want one.

I don't want one because ... they're weird! They're just ... weird. Creepy, even. Or at least surrealistic. If Salvador Dali were alive today, he'd be painting these instead of droopy watches.

I have an undeserved reputation as someone who lusts after every new technology that comes along. In reality, once I reach a level of technology that makes me comfortable, I tend to stick with it, even if it makes me look backward to hard-core technophiles. I may have been the last office professional in the Western Hemisphere to buy a PDA, and even then I bought the Zire m150, the entry-level black-and-white Palm from several years ago. My cell phone is a prepaid. I still don't have a TiVo, a Blackberry, or even, at the moment, a working DVD player.

So I won't be buying a soft, squishy keyboard, no matter how advantageous they are. I'm quite happy with what I have, thank you, even if I do sometimes spill stuff on it. Besides, I like to rest a keyboard in my lap when I type. That's hard to do with a keyboard that's more relaxed than I am.

I have a friend who is a hardcore technophile. She is so competitive and hates it when I have something more technically advanced than her. I find it rather humorous.
