Country haiku, anyone?

Ever notice how sometimes a song lyric can come out of nowhere and cut through the crap?

I was in a store the other day when a country song came over the speakers. This was the chorus:

"I'm not as good as I once was
But I'm as good once as I ever was"

I don't really have to explain why a forty-eight-year-old man would relate to that, do I?

At first I didn't know who sang that (I've since learned it's Toby Keith) or what the title was ("As Good As I Once Was"--duh!--from his Honkytonk University CD). Whatever the source, I may have to appropriate that as my personal theme song.

I wish I were clever that way. I wish I had a talent for writing song lyrics. I already know I don't have any talent for music, but I wish I could at least write lyrics that someone else could set to music. Alas, I can't write a rhyme at gunpoint. I'd try right now, but I can't think of anything that rhymes with "gunpoint." My only minor talent for verse is writing haiku.

There's not much call for
country songs in haiku. If
there were, I'd be rich.
