Stupid Test.

Today I had a test for Legal Systems. It was only woth 10% and I really don't give a shit about it. It was a stupid test and the lecturer is a stupid bitch.

She was going on about how there should be a separate justice system for Maori.

How would that work, having two separate laws, one for Maori and one for everyone else, you ask?

Well we asked the same thing. And you wanna know what her answer was?

Just look at Europe. Each country has a different set of laws, and when you cross the border you have to obey the laws of that country.

WHAT?

So are we gonna make all Maori live in the South Island and when we go there we abide by that law and when they come to the North Island they obey our law? No, that would never happen, and I wouldn't want that to happen.

Someone please explain how Europe having a different law in each country is the same as having a different law for different races?!

I don't think our law is perfect, and I think that tikanga Maori (Maori law) (practising my Maori for my essay lol) should be adopted into our general law. But I don't think they should have a separate law.

And what about the people who have like 1/64 Maori in them? Would they get to choose which law they went by?

And everytime we asked her questions like this she would just go on about Europe again. And she had other examples, which were the military having their own rules and punishments etc; SPORTS organisations who operate their own "judicial" board; and local authorities.

If she actually had proper research and examples to back up having a separate legal system it might have sounded a bit more conceivable. But she didn't. So I don't respect her at all.

The day after this lecture I was in another class where we were in groups of 5 and we started talking about the lecture. The four girls all said it was a stupid idea, but the one guy in our group said he supported it. After he explained why, it sorta made sense, but in the end we all agreed that parts of tikanga Maori should be introduced into "pakeha" law.

That woman makes me so mad lol.

Any society that has different laws for different people it is discrimination - it as aparteid.

I agree your lecturer needs her head read, and ponder what ideological planet the woman is on! Yes there are parts of tikangi that could be built into law, and probably for the better of our society too.

But I would quickly point out that much of the punishment that would be handed down under Maori law for , abuse and murder is far greater than that of any modern Westminster style of government hands out.

Under Maori law if you murdered or assaulted a woman, they offed with your head, for many lesser crimes like theft you were made a slave, as were your children and your childrens children...

'Once were Warriors' - 'Jake the Muss' came from a "long line of slaves" Thats where that comes from.

Me thinks many of the so call oppressed would find life a lot tougher under Maori law than our current system. Some might argue thats a good thing, but different laws for different folk ... thats aparteid, no other way to describe it.

Frankly anyone who promotes that kind of talk is in my book a racist

Stick to your guns!

If you find the coments offensive, make a complaint to the Vice Chancelor of the university, that would put the cat amoungst the pigeons! The woman is there to teach and is paid by the tax payer, not to promote her own radical adgenda.

Peech you got me all fired up!

I'm with Mush there Peche,

I also think it would be completely unworkable not to mention divisive.

As you so rightly point out, there are no borders in which to police seperate laws... unless that's the next step.

Next time you see her, say fuck off you manky slag.

LOL Bulge! Well luckily todays test was the last lecture with her But I didn't make it to Monday's class when they handed out the lecturer appraisal forms. But I am sure most of the class would have complained for me.

If I get the test back and I think she has marked me unfairly because of her stupid thinking, I will ask the other lecturer to look at it. He is an expert on the Treaty of Waitangi so if he says I was wrong in what I said I will accept it lol.

Yes military have their own laws, in Canada it's called the QR&O's (Queens Regulations and Orders). It's not completely separate, it's merely an addendum to the Canadian laws with specific focus on military aspects. Example: Offenses related to prisoners of war, mutiny, disobedience of a lawful command. Members of the military must still obey the laws of the country they are in/visit, unless it's sovereign land.

Since I'm a Canuck I know very little about the Maori, I can only assume your country is in a similar state as Canada is with the First Nations or Native Americans. And I can only state that apartheid's based on race are never a good idea. If a country wishes to be united and stands for equality, then you just can't have a separate legal system based on race alone. Hell, they can always try and separate... look at Quebec! LOL
