I am pooped!

Its 3.20am and I just got home from work! I usually finish between 11 and 12 but tonight was sooooooooooo busy!

And tonight I got my first complaint!

There was a booking for 60 people (well it was booked for between 50 and 60 people but 65 turned up). It was really busy all night and they didn't come in til the second sitting so we were all really tired by then.

I was doing the section the table of 60 weren't in and I was putting some drink orders into the computer when the lady was was the manager of the company that were booked in for 60 came up to me and said there weren't enough tables so can I do something about it. Not in a nice polite way either, she sounded as if she was blaming me for it and didn't say excuse me even though I was obviously busy.

So I said yeah sure I'll tell the supervisor and told her and went back to the computer to finish my order and the lady had gone. TWO minutes later she storms up to me and the conversation goes sorta like this:

Her: "Are you doing anything about getting more seats for my group? There are people standing around"

Me: "Yeah, I told the supervisor and she will be there in a minute"

Her: "Where is she?"

Me: "I'm not sure, she said she was just coming"

Her: "Well what does she look like?"

Me: "Shes the one in the suit"

Her: Points to another waitress obviously not in the suit "her?"

Me: No she is wearing a suit. Different to what everyone else is wearing.

Her: Well where is she?

Me: Ummm I don't know right now

Her: Well can you point her out? What does she look like?

Me: I can't see her right now, she is the one wearing the suit!

Her: What does the suit look like?

Me: Its black with a white shirt. Oh, there she is.

Her: Where?

Me: Over there moving the tree

Her: Which one?

Me: The one in the suit.

Her: Well is she sorting out the table?

Me: I don't know what shes doing right now.

Her: Okay I will go and speak to her about it. AND THERE IS NO REASON TO SPEAK BACK TO ME LIKE THAT.

Me: Sorry, I'm just busy right now.

Her: Yes but I'm a customer

Me: Well I am looking after another customer right now who is in my section so they are my first priority.

Her: Yes but I am paying around $1500 you should be thankful we are here.

Me: Okay sorry. (Thinks to myself 'its a Saturday night, we are always fully booked on Saturdays so we don't really need you and you should be thankful to us you could book such a big group AND they are paying the same price per person as every other person in the restaurant anyway).

Her: You shouldn't be talking back to customers like that.

Me: Okay sorry.

So she stormed off to speak to the supervisor and I finally got the bloody drink order done then realised the printer was broken so it had been a waste of time lol.

When I was taking to her, I wasn't getting angry towards her or raising my voice, I was just doing my job and had told the supervisor so I shouldn't have had to deal with her anymore anyway.

A while later the host came up and smiled sweetly at me and asked to speak to me for a minute. I knew she had complained and I explained what I had said and what she had said and the host said she understood where I was coming from but that I shouldn't have said anything to her. Then she told me that the table had only been booked for 50-60 and 65 were there "but we can't tell her that, shes a customer".

I was like what the fuck? She is only a person! And yeah she is paying a lot to be there but she should have made sure she had the numbers right and when she realised there weren't enough seats for everyone that had showed up she should have apologised and asked nicely if we would please be able to set up extra tables.

To me, it should by employees that come first and customers second. I don't think she should've spoken to my like that, even if we had fucked up and not set the amound she had asked for.

The supervisor didn't say anything to me about it so I don't think she really cared hehe. At least my table were nice and didn't complain that their drinks took so long!

AND THEN!... The supervisor (a nice one, not the one in my last post) said we had to get all the tables reset in 45mins cos the rugby team were coming in. So I reset my section as fast as I could then started cleaning the tables from the group of 60 becauser there were only about 20 of them left.

Then the stupid woman found out that the rugby team were coming in a squealed and went on and on about how they had to stay to see them and blah blah blah. When they come in it is only supposed to be for them and the management and families so I thought the supervisor would have asked them to leave.

But nooooo she told me to ask them to move to one of the tables I had just cleaned and reset so the rugby team could have the tables the group had been using!

*Smile and nod*

Thats all I could do lol. Then I asked one of the waitresses to tell the lady hehe. It was all good tho cos she asked me to do the table that the rugby guy who kept hitting on her last time was sitting at.

Also tonight I smashed my first glass lol. It wasn't as embarassing as I thought but the restaurant was pretty empty cos the rugby guys were only just starting to come in.

I had been carrying a tray with glasses and bottles on it and to get to the back of the bar we have to PULL the door open. I was just about to open it when the supervisor walked out and I wasn't expecting it and must've jerked the tray cos one of the empty bottles started swaying so of course I tried to steady the tray but really just made it worse and the wine glass smashed to the floor and the bottle went with it.

The bottle was fine and didn't even have a crack in it lol. From then on I made sure that I put the bottles in the middle and all the glasses round the side to stop them from wobbling.

Havn't had time to speak to the manager yet since she wasn't working last night and tonight we were way too busy right from the start.

Tomorrow I have to spend most of the day writing a 6page essay and doing other homework :s I've even started taking my books to work to read on my break lol what a geek!

I don't know how you do it. I am sure that I can't work and write my thesis at the same time. I would be so tired. You're a supergirl.

Yeah, don't ya just hate pushy obnoxious fuckers like that.

I agree. Civility and courtesy costs nothing.

To blindly go with the premise that the customer is right needs to be knocked on the head. There's no excuse for rudeness in my book.

Very rarely is the customer right. Merely an excuse for arseholes to wield the tiny bit of power that comes their way, over others that have to take it.
Hospitality is notorious for this kind of shit however. Next time, get the chef to chop a few of his pubes into the offenders meal...though I don't know anyone who ever did that.

Peche, Customers are pains in the asses totally. They think they have the god given right to bitch and moan about everything all the time. And alas it seems in a way they do.
I have dealt with shit like this for too many years. Now it seems, sometimes, I give them a piece of my mind.

Yeah. See, that's why I went into pulmonary and cardiac critical care. Because most of my patients are unconscious so I don't have to listen to them. And if they actually are awake, most if not all are like borderline dying, so they have a right to complain.

It's people who argue and complain about petty shit that "bugs the tits off me" as Bulge would say...

This is why you should spit in her drink. Then no matter what during the course of the night, you can smile and think "Say what you want but haha... I spent in your drink, you stupid bitch!"

I hate waitressing too, I just posted about it also from last night.

Saturday night's always a bitch!

But you know how it goes.. as long as the money's good....

Yay Monday huh?

I tend to agree with you Peche... There is something I used to tell my staff when I was running the Caltex over by the Burger King in Frankton that you might like...

"You may have heard that the customer is always right. Well the customer is NOT always right cos the customer don't know diddly squat about the job you do" (excuse the archaic language - but it gets the point across no?).

The same thing goes for the security job I do now... It might be the customers business... but often I know a LOT more about what goes on there than the customer does. The trick is making them understand that LOL
