Still Smiling

There's a song that they sing when they take to the highway
A song that they sing when they take to the sea
A song that they sing of their home in the sky
Maybe you can believe it if it helps you to sleep
But singing works just fine for me

Sweet Baby James/James Taylor

Spent a wonderful Saturday evening enjoying the music of James Taylor. For reasons known only to him, there he was playing at our State Fair. To add to the experience, it was a beautiful night, with a pleasant breeze cooling the crowd.
It seemed very strange to be sitting there waiting for him to take the stage..just as I had that night 35 years ago when I saw him the first time.
The crowd was very mellow, hardly any complaints, although the scheduled start time had passed some time ago..many of us in the crowd passed the time talking of those old days, comparing notes and guy of that "age" laughed and said that the only thing missing from a concert back then was for someone passing a doobie along the row..
What I found fascinating were the multi-generational families who came to the concert; most parents and children, many of whom were adults themselves..some with children of their many concerts draw 3 generations?
And then, there he was, entering the stage alone, to start with, just him and his guitar, and the story behind Sweet Baby James..
Once he started playing the crowd was his..singing along, clapping, swaying and dancing..
It was fun to watch the crowd as the concert went on..first just singing along, nodding their heads; then it was swaying in place; then they just had to get up and dance..
He played all the old favorites, and some I did not recognize. He had a great rapport with the crowd, laughing and talking a little between great moment was in response to people yelling out songs they wanted to hear..laughing, he held up the song list that lay by his feet, and pointed out where that particular song appeared on the list..that small gesture, made in fun, quieted the shouted requests.
As the concert wound down, you could tell that no one wanted the time to end, but as always, it did, he and the band left the stage after the encore, the crowd was left to bask in the moment..but briefly..then as promised, the fireworks started..and the evening ended..loudly.

Oh I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you again

I just heard that he is coming to one of the venues here in Hampton Roads. I would love to see him. Thanks for the memories this post invoked!

Never had the pleasure of seeing him in concert. A perennial favorite. I like him and Carly together in Mockingbird. What a fun song. And the memories this brings back, oh my. Sounds like a great time!
