When did the meaning of SINGLE change?

Very few things really challenge me as far as understanding or getting a firm grasp on a concept, but there is one thing that always leaves me completely baffled.

Somewhere along the line, I guess when I was not looking, or I may have been asleep, someone came along and changed the meaning of SINGLE. Based on the many responses I get from married men (despite the fact that my ad says SINGLE men), I am getting the distinct impression that single now means 'you can be married once you come alone...as in a single (read that as the word one)person.'

I have every respect for the institution of marriage and as such I won't help anyone cheat on their spouse. So now the argument is 'what if we are a couple and my spouse knows about what I do?' Then I say more power to you and your spouse, I am just not interested.

So, even if someone did change the meaning of single, I am still old school. Single means not married.
