A Lyrical Genius! NOT...

I couldn't believe it! I STILL don't believe it... It has just been proven that I have been singing a song wrongly... Not a big deal, huh? Yeah, it is. See, I have been singing this song wrong for over 20 fuckin' years... How can you NOT get the lyrics right in 20 years... For 26 to be exact... That's a quarter of a century! A year or two, O.K. Maybe even 5 years... But to go over two muthafuckin' decades getting a song wrong baffles me. And to make it worse, he is my favorite entertainer, I have all of his CD's, been to many of his concerts, I even stole his autograph...

The Artist; Prince
The song; 'Party Up'
CD; Dirty Mind
The Year; 1980
The Lyrics; 'They got the draft, uh, uh, I just laugh, Party up!'
The Wrong Fuckin' Lyrics; 'Take out the trash, uh, uh, I just laugh, Party up!'

For 26 years I have been singing, 'take out the trash'? What in the hell does that have to do with that song? Of course, being the prideful man that I am, I refused to believe this when the evidence was shoved in my face, so what do I do? I go home & fix the EQ to hear the lyrics only... And to my dismay, it's, 'They got the draft'.....
Fuck you!
Bite me!
I'm not paying you a damn thing!
Bet? What bet?
It's a conspiracy

For 26 years I have been butchering a song... 26 years!

HA! That is some funny ass shit!
not to say that even when I know the right words I'm not singing 'save my mom some taco sauce' but thanks for the laugh! Enjoyed it thoroughly!

HA! 'take out the trash'
what where you thinking? ;D )

So funny! I do that all the time--and surely for longer than 22 years! And the great thing is "take out the trash" didn't seem weird at all for all that time.

Keep it--it's way better than they got the draft.

They're called "Mondegreens." Missunderstood song lyrics. There's a GREAT book out called, "Scuse Me While I Kiss This Guy," complete with hilarious illustrations. I remember the first time I saw it in a book store. I picked it up and started leafing through it. I laughed so hard, my entire body shook. I tried to be quiet, but the harder I tried to suppress my laughter, the worse it got.

eilujsion, My pal... Glad you liked this one... 'Take out the trash?'... I don't know? It sounds like it! It hurts... I swore by this! TY...

BigGirlzSweet, 'Ox bananas in the material-al'???? (lol) Now how could you butcher Sting? He(The Police) are one of my favorites too, I have all of their CD's as well... Yeah, blame it on your youth... TY for sharing!

ediesedgwick, I am going to do just that! There is NO WAY that I am going to change it now... TY for understanding...

zebra_buggy, 'Mondegreens', huh? I must find this book, I will search this weekend. I will die if I find out that I have been butchering more songs.... Thank you for the info!

Tabitha, The light. Ah! But my pride is forever damaged, there is no reconciliation for 26 years of lyrical abuse... TY for commenting!

Nearly everyone does this and you might think the exception to this rule would be musicians and singers themselves. But believe me you wouldn't believe how many songs bandmates and I have arugued about and also sat together playing sections of songs over and over on tape straining to really hear what's being said.

This all done before the instant gratification era of today where you can instantly 20 different interpretions of the lyrics at your fingertips with one round of search engining it.

In the long run it never mattered if we got the lyrics right or not. I became endeared to many of our wrong versions more than the originals and nobody ever complained about the lyrics when we performed. In fact one group of guys and I made a point to always shift and taylor the lyrics a bit to both fit both us personally and to fit the particular location/situation we happened to be playing. That both personalized it and gave it a spontaneous edge which always allowed for doing it a little bit different each time we palyed.

Also sometimes even the lyrics given at the internet sites is not the official version written up by the artist themsleves. There is a disclaimer at Led Zeppelins official site stating that the lyrics given there are chosen from submission and may not be completely accurate.

So with that in mind sometimes even if you think you are wrong you still might actually be right.

Personally I'm a huge fan of wrong lyrics. And I definitely like "take out the trash" WAY better than "they got the draft".

It somehow "cuts to the core" whereas the other is merely a blunt edge that barely slices through warm butter.

KC JJ, TY for commenting... So the band 'screws' up as well, huh? That's nice to know! Yeah, my version was on the cutting edge. Nice to know that a musician thinks that I have RAW talent... Great comment!

LustyTaurus, First of all, is there any 'other' type of TAURUS? TY for stopping by my new friend, but I may STILL be singing, 'take out the trash.'

2Tongues, I think you feel like me... Some musicians are fantastic & then you wonder how some of them even get ANY play... 'Ain't no holla back, girl!" WTF?.....Again.....WTF?

The Jam sang a song called The Eton Rifles. I originally thought it said "Need two right balls". WTF are right balls?
