My Dad the Hero...

I as thinking about this earlier today and thought I'd share this little memory of my chilodhood about me and my dad. 1st off let me preface the story by saying that I grew up in Michigan and my dad is (was, he's retired now) an automotive engineer for GM. But hey, in MI everyone works for an auto manufacturer...EVERYONE!! Unfortunately, in the early 80's GM started laying off folks and just did't stop. So my dad was chasing his career for the past 25 years, switching employers a lot because of downsizing and layoffs and whatnot...But he always found a (legal way) way to provide and made it look like nothing was wrong....Anyway...on with the story...

When I was in 1st grade we were getting new playground equipment. A bunch of new stuff: swings, jungle gym, little fitness stations...But there was no money to hire folks to build it. So all the teachers asked their classes if their any of our fathers may be willing to donate some time to help build the playground.

Hands went up in the air and everyone started bragging about thier fathers: "My dad can build it, he's a construction worker." "My dad's an architect, he makes this stuff, he can build it." THe stories went on. "Well," I said "My dad's not working, I'll ask him." (Fortunately, for me, I was at an age when "free lunch" wasn't a badge of shame yet) When it came time for the stuff to arrive we were all pumped. New playground stuff, a 1st graders premature wet dream!

But when it came time to build the new playground my dad was the only guy around. Only one man to dig post holes, assemble a 7 ft. high dome jungle gym, set up swings, cut planks, you name it. During recess we were all watching him work and trying to help. ( that was back when you could hand a 1st grader a scew driver and not have to worry about it ending up in someone's eye sockett).

It took him about 2 weeks, working 8 hours a day and I hung out with him at recess, which was when he took his breaks. Those were probably some of the best times of my life because all the kids thought my dad was the greatest guy in the world. Some of them even asked their dads again and again to help because they wanted their dad's to be out there too.

He built that stuff to last. I was just out there last year and all the equipment is still there and still in good shape. Nice job dad.

I hope I get the chance to do stuff like that for my kids one day...

OK, enough for now...
Maybe next time I'll tell about the time that my dad accidently picked up a hooker...Hey, he's always looking to help people out...hehe

Great to see actual people like that. Most of humanity is just flakes.
I think my dad spent most of his time watching football on tv and when I was 14 my parents sent me to school in England. From then on I saw them 4 times until I was 20.
